Tayna for batteries

Why are they so cheap? Is it just bulk buying? I ordered a Yuasa silver battery for the Mk3.75 yesterday, came today. Buying direct from Yuasa (UK base is about two miles from me) would be £130. Halfords want £100. I paid £51 plus £10 for next day delivery.

I bought an EFB battery from them for a Mazda 6 a couple of years ago and it was similarly cheap compared to elsewhere. I have previously waited for offers at Euro Car Parts but they were nowhere near on price this time.

None of these prices include fitting but that’s a 10 minute job on the MX-5, including turning the steering lock to lock and resetting the one-touch windows.

I have absolutely no connection with Tayna but I don’t understand why battery pricing is so different for the same item. Are some vendors just hoping to cash in on distress purchases?

Battery Megastore are similar, I paid £48 for mine delivered.

For most car users batteries are a panic purchase often at the side of the road or a remote location or you need to get to work right now then the presence of someone who will either fit one straight away or drive you to the nearest stockist is all they want.
If you can wait and buy one in your own time then there is, as usual, money to be saved.

I bought a 12V motorcycle battery from Tayna last month. Despite the instructions that often come with a new battery, advising that they are fully charged and ready to fit, I always like to check them over and give them a quick boost charge before fitting, to save having to do the job twice. Good job I did, the voltage was down to 9.1 Volts and my smart charger wouldn’t recover it. I rang them and received an apology and a promise that a replacement would be sent out asap. It arrived in less than 24 hours!

Thanks for that!
I’ve just ordered a car battery from Tayna for powering a remote birdbox webcam, looking for highest capacity for lowest price. A very quick Google produced a 5% discount code too - FACEBOOK45.

What is this resetting windows you speak of, helpful and knowledgeable one?

Tried Tanya today for a possible new battery in our 2002 Sport which happens to be the actual original fitted at factory.
However, looks like it’s Westco only…suffice to say the Mk1 has eaten two of these and I reverted back to Panasonic. No drama…it’s just a battery. I’ll get onto Mx5Parts or summat.

When you disconnect the battery on a Mk3.75, and maybe any NC, two minor issues are apparent on reconnecting:

  1. DSC light stays on
  2. Windows no longer go right down with one touch.

To fix (1), the steering has to be turned lock to lock. You can do this without scrubbing the tyres if you roll the front wheels onto a few stacked pages of a glossy magazine. Just driving the car also sorts it eventually, but you may not have stability control if you swerve to avoid something.

To fix (2), wind the windows right down in one go, then back up again. This doesn’t always work first time.

Should have added that the NC is easier as it uses a standard battery under the bonnet. The NA has an AGM one so it doesn’t make a mess in the boot.

Re: Halfords…

There’s quite a difference between running a highly focused mail order operation, and maintaining and operating a large chain of multi product retail stores… in running costs. The great advantage of Halfords is that they are usually not too far away…, they are open at all sorts of hours…, and you can see , feel, and touch a lot of what they have for sale. All of that costs money, which you and I as customers eventually pay for.

Tayna…

They operate, as I recall, from what appears to be a unit on an industrial estate in Wales.
I’ve bought 3 or 4 batteries from Tayna, for several cars, over the last number of years. They have always arrived very quickly, and very well packaged.

A couple of the batteries have been ‘yer basic cheapo battery’…, Tayna badge them as their Powerline brand. One of these was a Heavy Duty which went into my then daily Peugeot 406 HDI. Never a problem. The other, at around £40’ish, went into my MX5 to replace the Panasonic which had finally died. I chose it because I was slightly skint at the time, the car was on a SORN over winter, and I just needed something to occasionally start the car up, and that fitted into the standard Mk1 battery tray.
After a couple of months, one of the cells failed. I bunged in an old, spare battery. Covid arrived, and after about a year, I wrote to Tayna. They promptly sent out a new replacement. That was about 20 months ago. Still works fine.

I also bought a Varta Blue type 063 ( standard small car size ) for my daily Yaris from Tayna. Currently around £55. Top brand, made in same factory as the equivalent Bosch as I recall. I think it’s really the same battery as the Bosch, just that the Bosch name adds a few pounds.

Overall, if I absolutely needed a battery NOW, TODAY…, I’d have no problem buying from Halfords. Otherwise, tomorrow morning is fine for me. As is Tayna.

Many thanks for the advice, the one about the glossy mag pages too…
