GENUINE COBRA 8510 THATCHAM APPROVED CAT 2 TOUCH KEY CAR IMMOBILISER. NEW IN BOX | eBay

If so, your thoughts, please?
The hardware is identical to one fitted by a “specialist” that cost a great deal more, so I thought I might fit one to my car.

I used a Laseine 921K immobilisor on my last Kit Car and it worked just as it said on the tin. There are installers around the country as far as I understand.

On my recent purchase Mx5 NC I will get one fitted by an installer because tracing the cables etc. looks a pain, installers make it look easy. I fit my own on my last car but that was easier because I wired the complete car in the first place.

See link below, Laserline 921K is also available on eBay.

If you are going to have it installed I would have the installer supply the unit in the overall price then all is the installer responsibility.

Good luck

I thought Thatcham approved could only be installed by approved installers?

A DIY install probably won’t qualify for any discount on insurance premiums and may incur an additional charge

Agreed, however what I found with my last car was that I would not get an insurance discount anyway even if I had an immobiliser fit by an approved company… it felt far more secure for me though.

I think you’ll find that the Thatcham approval applies to the hardware, which in this case is branded “Vodaphone Automotive”. This package is normally supplied to the trade, and is probably manufactured in the PRC. An official installer would buy these in bulk and provide a “certificate of installation” which some insurance companies require. (It’s also sold as a Cobra 8510.)
I think any deterrent is better than none, irrespective of any insurance discounts, and for £43, it’s probably worth a punt now that mk1 values are being talked up. It’s highly unlikely that you’d be penalised by an insurance company for fitting a theft deterrent.
