The All New MX-5 ND, Mark 4 press review thread...

Wheres the slot for the CD I now tech has changed but I would still want to be able to play mine, glad I bought a 3.75 when I did.

OK - I would be turning that off straight away!

At least the “spy in the cab” E-call GPS tracker system mandated by the EU is delayed by a couple of years. A chance to buy a new car without it.

I did read that the EU (predictably) will soon expect car makers to fit devices that prevent cars from exceeding the speed limit.

Add that to compulsory road-pricing (the EU are starting to demand that this is rolled out) - it’s possible to see the boring future world of motoring that the EU have planned for us.

Any idea when order book opens think I’m gonna have to get one

Some say they have already put down deposits and I guess an enterprising car salesman will happily take your money even though he can’t tell you anything about the car he can sell you yet, such as; engine size, colour etc.

Nothing actually confirmed on availability yet… we wait with bated breath…

Really interesting Q&A with Jack Baruth who was one of the reviewers.

Here you go

Seen on an Australian site, the 2.0l at Chicago Show, 116Kw…

I don’t think I’ve seen the link below to the many reviews from Barcelona.

But it’s a unanimous bunch of automotive journalists who praise the new MX-5, although it is only a pre produktioncar.

Enjoy reading.

With regard to the CD fitting. I take it pressing the eject button jettisons the can through the hood and lowers the necessary cup holders before proffering the tray? Or are we limited to loading a CD before embarking on a trip. Access whilst driving seems a little differcult??

That is Navigation DVD slot - likely there will be no CD without a specification change.

Cup holders are removable, there are couple of locations in the car that they slot in to

Mazda video of US-spec B-Package 2.0 with Brembo brakes and BBS wheels;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pePbfUR6tWc

US spec launch edition is red with a tan leather interior.

Does anyone have a photo of the new car with silver alloys? I’ve only seen dark grey or black wheels so far.

Not a good shot but it proves they exist!

I must admit I am tempted I need a few things to happen first like sorting my house out though! hahaha! (I refuse to sell my 3.5)

My only concern is rust protection underneath in honesty I hope Mazda have improved on this…no where has mentioned if things have been done properly this time around.

I think I would go soft top in black with tan leather or something along those lines. I hope the 2.0 litre comes here as I quite fancy a 2.0.

Saw the car at Oulton park, looked most impressive, one thing that did concern me however was the plastic sill finisher that wrapped round into the rear wheel arch, it forms a perfect trap for all the salt and grit we “enjoy” on our roads. Anybody else spot it? We do not need obvious potential corrosion spots like that.

Is this where I park my bike ?

My local Main Dealer has no idea when they will get a demo or two. Nor did they seem especially passionate about it…which pretty much reflects the general lack of bated breath from the public. There’s simply been too much phaffing around with this debacle. Launch indeed? More like a marketing still-birth. Complete shambles and I think Mazda had better watch out as there are a good few more alternatives these day (let’s not get breathy & perspiring about wind in the hair & Jinba Ittai for a moment) that offer open top fun than ever before. OK, some of them are chop-top puddings but they are out there and people buy them. Rather have a 2/3 year old cherished Propeller Z myself (yer, potential money pit) or a GT86 than buy a Mk4 now tbh…and I’m not alone. In Australia, the Mx5 is steadily becoming showroom history in favour of other marques, albeit there is a huge Club following for older versions.

The GT86 has been a sales disaster; bizarrely, Australia is the 3rd biggest market for the car, but only because it is priced at cheaper than other markets, despite Australia, outside of Singapore, being the most expensive place to buy a car (thanks to protectionist measures and dependance on commodities). In any case, Australia has always been a small MX5 market; sales in hundreds per year only. I doubt that car will be around much longer; Toyota have said the lack of sales have killed off any chance of a cabrio version or even a bigger engine… There are rather less drop tops made now than a few years ago; I don’t think Mazda has to worry too much about that new Honda. Nothing from PSA, Ford (unless you count a 4-cylinder Mustang, which will be as awful as the last time Ford had a 4-cylinder Mustang). Maybe the Renault is still toiling, but its ancient. MG won’t be launching a roadster until 2017 at the earliest. No Volvo CC. Nothing else Japanese. BMWs cost more, and breakdown more (and no such thing as a 3 year old cherished BMW). Mini dropped its roadster after a lack of sales. The Kia remains vapourware. The VW/Skoda roadster remains a sketch, and needs 40k sales a year to break even (ie. double the current MX5 global sales). So what cabrio rivals?

As for dealers not getting enthusiastic about a car they can’t sell for many more months; they still have NC stock to shift.

Your comment about births might offend or upset some.

And lets not forget; the first Miata road tests by the press were done in October 1988, with the car not on sale in the US until June 1989, in Japan in September 1989, and the UK, January 1990. I have read of rumours (nothing more than that) that supply issues affecting the 2.0 Skyactiv-G motor has had an impact on Mazda’s entire range, and that might explain the lack of 2.0 models being unveiled in Europe, and indeed, the US. Throw into that FCA’s scatty about-turn to rebadge their Alfa Romeo as a Fiat, ie use their version to go head to head with the MX5, rather than compete as an Alfa Romeo with the elderly Z4 in a more premium market. Considering Europe is now Mazda’s biggest market for the MX5, that must have had a serious effect on how they would position the 1.5. It might have even caused the decision to add the 2.0, which is the model curiously absent from the launches.
