The John Player Special Edition

It’s rare apparently

Is this a one off

I have a pot of gold paint and a steady hand so if anyone wants their MX5 to become a cigarette packet from the seventies  “Limited edition special” I am more than willing to have a bash.

No - it’s a rip-off. Mazda did not make a JP SE, nor did anyone else, except the seller. Next step will be a Lotus MX5 I expect. At 99K+ they claim no rust, yeh - in their dreams.

And what is happening with the ride height

MOT history check shows mileage as just over 102k 21st July 2017! Also rust noted on previous tests.

If it was a JPS it would be black not green, oh and did any one want the JPS stickers I have still got some when Ronnie Peterson drove the JPS in F1.  I also have two of the laurel leaf ones. And by the way I did know that there was not a JPS Ltd edition.  There is a mx5 in Western region that is painted in lotus colours aka the gold leaf colours.

Surely if it has been “clocked” it’s a case for “Trading Standards”?

Roger - nobody said it was clocked, what gave you that idea? At 99K+ miles (or 102K) it’s not been clocked, - just misclaimed. Either way, if it was MOT’d with rust issues, then that is proof enough the ad is a con. I agree with Mal on the colour, BRG (another fallacy) is NOT a JP colour. Also, the ad does not say - anywhere - that it is a JP SE. Storm in a teacup? Or a genuine con act, or a mistake? - who knows. Anywhichway, it’s a WA.

Gerry - I merely noticed the difference between the mileage on the MOT record - 102072,  and that claimed in the advert - 99989, and asked a question.  In no way did I say or suggest that anybody else had claimed that the car had been “clocked”.

Obviously it’s not a real special edition, was posted in jest

Hi Andy.  Yes, granted you posted it in jest, but the ad. is genuine and misleading.  Naughty, naughty second-hand car dealer living up to the trade’s uncomplimentary reputation.

To be fair, it’s not the worst eBay ad I’ve come across while looking for my next car project!

That is VERY true!

The sills may potentially be rust free but I bet the chassis rails are nice and crusty, though to be fair the seller may not know that.

When I decide to sell my current MX-5 I’m not going to remove all the tar spots from the paintwork. I’m marketing it as a Capstan Full Strength Special.

For a moment, I thought someone had imported this well known example;

Or maybe this thing

Sadly not!
