The New 4th Generation MX-5 picture and feedback thread.

I think it will be impressive looking in the flesh - possibly a bit of a sheep in wolf’s clothing depending on the horsepower.

Really like the new look…

But at that price, I’ll continue to enjoy my RS that cost a TENTH of that & has probably 95% of the fun…Cool

Just my tuppence worth of course, as I could never afford one anyway!

Bill

Rear and side look great, not sure about front. Integrated round headlamps would have been my choice.

Turns out these are non-runners, and officially “pre-production prototypes”, meaning between now and the tail end of next year, when it goes on sale, all sorts of changes might occur (such as inclusion of a glovebox). Probably there will be body changes, much like the production GT-86 was a little different to the concept FT-86 shown 12 months previously.

Not entirely non running, the US one was driven on to the stage at the launch…

I watched the USA release. The car shot drove from under the sheet and initially thought, with the black wheels/ door mirrors/ windscreen surround / similar red paint job that they had wheeled out a 25th anniversary! A few seconds later, once I'd relalised my error, like a number of you I was somewhat underwhelmed. Perhaps with all the hype it had left me expecting some sort of instant 'super' classic.

Since then the more I look at it the more its started to grow on me. Mazda's release photo's look frankly stunning but other less dramatically produced photos havent left me with the same 'I must have it' feeling. In reality there's no substitiute for seeing the thing in the flesh so hopefully it will be making an appearance at Gaydon?

It is though going to be another great MX5 like all the three previous generations that have come before it. Some of you will undoubtably dislike its differences / individuality and will no doubt it will divide opinions as much as my "stunning" MK3 Kuro does for some you MK1 MK2 drivers !

For me I'd rather embrace the differences of each MK, and as great as car as it is, I wouldnt want to see just a direct clone of a Mk1. Would we really want that? Personnally I'm bored with seeing other manufacturers wheel out the next new BMW Mini / VW Beetle and not being able to see any obvious difference from the previous incarnation.

Eventually I reckon I'll be driving a Mk4 although probably not for a couple of years yet. What's going to be really interesting is to see Fiat's (hopefully Abarth) take on it sometime next year.......

Not sure if anyone else has picked up on this, but it looks like they’ve included a slot for my 8 track cartridges? (Just below middle heater knob):

What would bother me about owning one - is that the (ugly) LCD panel looks like it would attract the attention of thieves.

Even if it’s no use to them after ripping it out - the damage would be done. It could be retractable but probably not according to Roadster Robbie.

You’re right andypap !!

never mind all this cd/usb/mp3 rubbish. Somewhere to stick the 8 tracks !!!

Andypap is right the screen is ugly. It looks too big and sits too high up on the dash. I’ve got one in my other drive an A class merc. you get used to them very quickly but pretty they ain’t! Audi do it better in all there cars it just slips away into the dash. Mazda should have done the same.

As for someone nicking em dont they tend to design these things so they cant be used in any other vehicle other than a 5? So as not to interest the light fingured? There not like the old cassette players they used to fit.

I say dump the 8 track I want a cassette in mine! Dont Maxda realise were all old yet!

Picking up that the pop up or fixed screen on the dashboard is not a popular revision.

I for one hope they keep it pure and simple - the mx5 was defined for not what it had but for what it didn’t have - I hope they remember this.

If they decide its what buyers want/ expect these days - then it would be better that it folds down and disappears .

Personally unless I wanted sat nav assistance - I wouldn’t want to look at it or see it in view - it looks so wrong.

Love the fact they kept the circular air vents

Great that everyone is expressing their views ( I have 3 times already!!!) You never know they might listen to the views expressed so far.

I could’nt wait to see it revealed - now looking forward to seeing it amongst us.

Yes, but the IQ of vandals and opportunist thieves is not that high. It just looks so much like someone’s left the ipad in the car.

On the road with a slow driveby.

Cant agree more from the photos it certainly looks like an ipad balanced on the dash. Its a poor installation on my A-class but at least the unit itself looks more stylish. Like Johnboy i’d rather they kept it simple but thats just not going to happen is it. Were just going to have to learn to live with it.

There is a law coming out in the US that all cars have to have reversing cameras and therefore visible screens so before too long all cars will have them. These young thieves are far more tech savy than I’ll ever be and they will realise that there is no point stealing them unless its steal to order for another 5. Mazda wouldnt have been really stupid and just raided the Mazda 3/6 parts bin would they?

The vandal element is always going to be even more of an issue for those of you who buy the soft top and not the prht version. That’s why Mazda should have had the sense to make the screen so it slid away into the dash. If Audi can do it in their smaller cars then Mazda could have done the same. It’s so inviting for some idiot to try and rip it out. No leaving the roof down anymore while I pop into the shops.

It makes you wonder who exactly Mazda employs to review designs when they get most things so right, but a few things so obviously wrong!

The usual comments are appearing on newpaper sites about the new MX5 needing 200+ BHP - which shows a lack of understanding - an MX5 is not a super car, and increasing the standard horsepower to 200 or more would put many customers off - and also raise the insurance rating and CO2 emissions.

Here it is moving, in the sun at Laguna Seca.

I just hope we have the same view at Gaydon, come on Mazda, it’s not far from Barcelona, I will even drive it up if required

Well, how odd, moving in that youtube video it doesn’t look anywhere near such a revolution in design as before. Looks a lot more like evolution…  Looking forward to seeing a few more colours.  Oh please lets have some proper sports car colours and not the usual greys and silvers…

I was thinking that Martin - it’s as if the nose isn’t as ‘squashed’ as it looked in the stills.

Yes that

This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3AfCRJAmk8 although from the launch has someone with a camera going round the car showing some more details from different angles.
