The sound of water

I’ve noticed that there is the sound of water from behind me/rear nearside corner when cornering and pulling away.
The cab area is now bone dry after I removed the soft top and cleared everything up and sorted the drain holes out behind the seatbelt mounts.
The boot area seems fine and I’m stumped. Any suggestions?

You don’t say what age MX-5 it is. It’s coming from behind you and not is the sills yes? It’s not fuel-slosh in the tank is it? you can sometimes here that when the tank is a bit under full.

It’s a ‘93 Eunos. Oddly enough I put some fuel in the other day, just under a full tank, the first time since getting it.
Could it be that simple?

Maybe it could…

Are you aware of the drain holes in the sills though?

No, not aware of anymore drain points apart from the ones I’ve already cleaned out when I took the hood off. Are there more?

If you look along the bottom of the sills, the flange that protrudes down to be more specific, you’ll see 2 pairs of lumps, one pair towards the front and one pair towards the rear. On the back side of each of these lumps is a drain hole, if they become blocked and the roof drains are blocked and overflow then the water builds up in the sills and you get a sloshing noise. If you locate the holes and gently clear away any clogging that you may find using a small screwdriver blade or similar, you may find water drains out.

Many thanks. I’ll try a little later!

I think this photos should explain it clearer, it’s the view from the inside behind the lump.

I’ve just quickly had a look and have got a horrible feeling that someone has previously repaired the sills and possibly welded up the drain hole?!
Looking at the picture you put up I can see the duck tail drain from the roof and so can work out the rough location of where mine should be. However, I appear to have new metal there!!!

I’ve taken a couple of pictures but can’t seem to load them…

If there’s no water in there it’s not the end of the world if they’ve been “repaired”. Check the ones at the front.

It looks like I have water weeping out of the repair so I’m guessing I’m going to have to drill them out again to drain?

It’s an icon with a flat box with an up arrow coming out of the top…

That’s up to you, people have put their own drillings in before now.

Not the best picture of the inner sill I know but you can hopefully see it appears wet?
I’ll jack it up tomorrow and drill a drainage hole and see how much pours out!!

Quite common for these sills to have been weld repaired and the little drains no longer operable.
Our Eunos has had three holes punched/nailed into the offside sill, so not even a flat hole. After nearly 12 years in our ownership I can say this is not recommended but has worked.
I would drill a 6mm hole about three quarters of an inch onto the flat area at the base of the sill past the seam piece. Rust kill and paint to preserve.
Sills should only have to deal with condensation but it seems that the water from the roof drains behind the seats can under certain circumstances get into the sills, particularly on the earlier MK1 style cars.

Job done.
Very frustrating to think it could have been done properly when the repair was done. It took less than 30 seconds to do once I’d got it slightly higher in the air to allow to get the drill under.
