Hi,
I am looking at buying my second MX5 Mk1. My aim is to turn it into a perfect ‘drivers car’
The last MX5 I had was the 1.6 and this was almost perfect, but I would have liked a bit more power. I am thinking of getting a 1.8 and maybe turning that into a 2.0l engine. Has anyone had any experiance in doing this?
Another option would be to change the engine altogether.
I know a putting turbos in them is quite common, but this is something I dont want to do as I dont like turbo lag when driving, I m looking for real engine power.
any advise from anyone who has a 1.8 or has messed around with the engine before much appreciated!
Early (low compression) Mk1 1.8 bottom end
Mk2 Head
MP62supercharger/intercooled/managed
Mk 1 1.6 LNC, and add boost, best engine through the range., turbo lag with the new turbos is not even noticable we have moved on in that area from the good old days, but you can slot in a supercharger, or like you say change the whole engne gearbox etc to your choice, most of what your after as already been done so why not just get one that as already been done, saving a shed load of money and hassle.
Electrics on the MK 1 1.8’s are touchy and the MK 2 1.8 version use oil, with the VVT Mk 2.5 1.8 if you bang that in a MK 1 shell you will need to get the VVT working, MK 2/2.5 shells are rubbish unless you get one that is fresh to get her undersealed and the box section protected, MK 3’s are a bit girly unless you but time and money in one suspension Etc, before you even thing about boosting, starting to see the MK’s coming through with rot on them now with being made out of the same gauge steel as the 2’s so same again with the protection, someone as just made a lovely kit for the £ that does not look like a dogs dinner when fitted and likes like it was factory fitt attension to detail is spot on,( thread on here sowewhere?)
