The unbearable burden of "enthusiast" car ownership

Couple of years ago our Skoda Roomster got written off whilst parked in a supermarket car park. So we bought a Skoda Yeti to replace it. It gets serviced at Halfords, is completely unmodded/unimproved, and is treated like the dull but worthy workhorse it is. I think it’s been cleaned maybe four times since we bought it.

Couple of weeks ago the struggle of two people three “jobs” one car living rurally became too much to bear so we pulled the trigger on second car MX-5. Cost about 1/3rd less than the Yeti.

Yet I’m turning into a fully fledged MX-5 nerd, worried about my bumpstops, my drains, my silver bolts, my grommets, my sills, and, my silent enemy, rust. I’ve fixed three faults and done a couple of upgrades. I worry about what might go wrong, fret over every rattle, and have dug my dusty spanners out from the back of the garage where they’ve sat since I stopped riding and maintaining motorbikes a decade ago. I devour articles and YouTube videos on MX-5 NCs like there’s no tomorrow and I regret any day when I don’t get the excuse to drive it. (and it’s meant to be her car!)

What has happened to me!?

Fret not, it has happened to many of us.
Hon No.2 Daughter suggested that maybe it is because it is an interesting car, one with personality…
Interesting, yes.
Personality?
Maybe not, its a car, beautiful, but a car?

I’m sure many people here can relate to your story, and have a similar one of their own.

It’s an interesting car when compared to the majority of others you see on the road. I think that’s mostly to do with the history behind it.

Send me a ‘private message’ and I will put you in touch with my psychiatrist and counsellor!!!

Be warned though it will do you no good at all, once you’re in, you’re in, there is no escape!!

Greg, you like many others have come to the party late, but fear not there is enough enthusiam and passion to be had for these little gems of the motoring world.

Yes, there are faster dropheads on the road with their thirsty engine and expensive insurance, for those of us who have owned an MX for a decade or more know that we have more admiring looks, not envy and a wider range of ownership when it comes to driver age than other sportscar.

They are cheap to service, insure, buy spare parts for and of course absolutely fabulous to drive. There is enough interest for those like yourself who like to get the spanners out, plenty of mods and additions to pimp your ride with grilles, chrome plates…need I go on!
One last comment, take your wife/partner for a drive to buy an ice-cream and eat it with the top down close to a lake or coast scene and she will love you forever.
Mine does…

Malc, if you are the result of psychiatry and counselling professionals they must have got their qualifications off the back of a cornflake packet.
