Thought this was funny?

Nothing wrong with crossply tyres, had these on my Caterham SLR, phenomenal performance.

It’s not so much the construction as the tread shape.

Crossplys always seemed to have a square shoulder to the tread and these found every line on the road to drag you away from where you wanted to go. The radials had the tread running around onto the sidewall, and stopped the tram-lining completely.
I changed from x-plys to radials (Dunlop SP with Aquajet sipes as in the picture below) as soon as they were available, and they transformed the handling of almost any car I bought afterwards with x-plys from dire to excellent.

My first car was an 850 Mini which tram tracked alarmingly on it’s cross-plys, soon swapped them for cheap radials which I wore out far too quickly! Oh for the care free days of youth!

Funny thing is M_M , they were crossply on a Ford Anglia van. From memory they were BF Goodrich, and believe me, they did not provide much grip in the wet, even on a gutless engine.

Every FIAT Ritmo I saw seemed to be rusting from the showroom. I bought an MG Maestro new and all the seams on that were rusting from the inside out but it was a lovely drive.

Mine (Viva HB) was an absolute nightmare to change gear, 1st to 2nd and reverse. I traded it in for a 2.3 Victor.
