Hi all, needing a bit of help. In the process of swapping my front subframe and polybushing the front control arms and need to replace the outer tracking rod. Problem is it’s sheared while removing it from the hub. Struggling to get it undone using wrenches and was wondering if there’s something else I should try? Can’t use the hub to hold it still to loosen as the stud is too short to securely stay in place and I have used penetrating fluid and heat to try and loosen but to no avail.
Yes, I’m trying to find a way to stop the tie rod spinning, because I can’t use the hub to jam it against due to where it’s broken. My only thought was to fully reassemble suspension, and use the jack to try and hold it in place, pushing the rod up into the hub if that makes sense?
Even in the hub it’ll be tight to undo I think. I’d probably carefully cut through the nut/track rod end with a thin cutting disc taking care not to catch the thread on the tie rod. Maybe cut a deep slot in the nut to weaken it, then try a chisel to split it apart.
Heat on the track rod and lock nut and then cold water on inner tie rod. Then grip the track rod with mole grip or stilson with a big adjustable on the lock nut.
Thanks for all your help everyone, I managed to borrow some extra tools + muscle from a neighbour, got it off and finished up this long project! New polybushed upper and lower control arms, anti roll bar links, outer tie rod ends, 4 wheel laser alignment, refurbished anti roll bar and front subframe!
Roughly followed @CompletelyDriven’s YouTube videos, which were a massive help, so thank you very much! Question is, how do you make it look so easy?! Yours must be less rusty than mine
