Aquired my 5 last week - 2000 with 54000 miles done - and found half a bottle of Redex in the boot.
Are there any real benefits to be had using fuel treatments (i’d have thought modern petrol would contain all the additives needed)?

I cant speak for Redex as ive never used it, but ive always had a high regard for Lucas. I regularly use thier injector cleaner. http://www.lucasoil.com/articlelist1-14/0/LucasFuelTreatment
Either way, I cant see the redex doing any harm.
Despite using many strong doses of Redex in my car I had a partially blocked fuel injector that was only fixed by 50 minutes of continuous ultrasonic cleaning.
I go for STP myself and give it a dose at the recomended intervals . I have found once you have put it in a full tank of petrol and used it all up the engine does rev a lot freely. I am never tempted to over dose as well and keep a record of millage when i do it.
Years ago i used to redex my cars and motorbikes by getting the engine hot then squirting the redex straight into the air intake after the filter. Ever seen a motor on fire you do then with smoke belching out of the exhaust and all the crap from the valves and combustion chambers.
You could say it is like us having a real good curry.
most of these contain an octane enhancer
so make the car feel more sprightly whilst its mixed with the fuel
I use redex for fueling on trackdays for this reason
but i doubt it has any real “cleaning” propertys

Some guys, Pollyanna for instance, swear by Redex. I have never found a good reason to use it in a modern car with modern fuels.
I don’t understand this Alan, octane enhancers simply lessen the likelihood of pre ignition, they don’t, afaik, improve performance in any way—
I agree with Geoff on this one, I used to use REDEX in the days of old, I can remember the smoke blotting out the light, as I poured in into the carb venturi. Nowadays with the petrol we now have on offer, I don’t use it any more.
With the car engines all capable of doing well over 100,000 miles with absolutely no care or special maintenance I can’t see the point of the stuff. I’m not sure it does any harm either though, so if it’s free and laying around in the boot of your car anyway why not?
I put a bottle of Redex in the tank as and when it is on special offer at Asda! Never seems to do any harm but never really notice any difference in performance. I like others used to create smoke screens in the oldern days. If it is cheap, or free, what harm can it do - after all, Redex has been around forever.
I agree with the general consensus - if its very cheap or free then using it as per the user instructions probably wont be a bad thing.
I wouldn’t use it day in day out on a modern car though - as in my mind there is no need.
I don’t believe Redex does any harm and probably does help to unstick valve stems and piston rings that have become gummed up with varnish. Unfortunately it did not help at all in clearing a clogged fuel injector on my car - it took 50 minutes of intense ultrasonic cleaning to rectify this.
For anyone that has suspected fuelling problems I would recommend fitting a new fuel filter (if it has not been replaced recently) and then follow this up with flow testing and cleaning of the injectors.
I used to put REDEX, in the green bottle, for injector cleaning at each fill up of petrol and it cured the idle problem I had. after about two years I now only put it in about 6 times per year and the engine still idles rock steady.
