Tonneau cover press studs

I have a tonneau cover from a mk 1 which I want to convert for my mk 2.5. Does anyone know where I can get the large press studs for fitting the cover to the sides of the seatbelt tower and side of car. I can’t see any on ebay that look large enough.

 Waste of time

Loads of Mk2 ones about. More important they are different sizes. The row of studs on the carpet are further forward on the Mk1

If you really want to fit it change the fittings on the car, rather than the hood cover

OP

The MK1 cover is far better made than the Mk 2 cover, the fittings are easy to change, give Andrew at autolink a bell.

Well the cover was free and is in excellent condition and that is why I suggested changing the fittings. If I was buying one I would get one specifically for my Mk 2.5 hence my desire to change fittings. It looks like the tonneau cover that I have engages with the car via a short thin rod rather than a popper. Would this sort of thing be available aftermarket although it looks I could possibly knock something up that might work. Does anyone have a picture of what these look like on a Mk 1?

Its called a Tenax (“lift the dot”) stud.Autolinkuk have them, used, for ÂŁ6 each plus post:

Or ÂŁ10 new from MX5parts

Woolies also generic Tenax studs:

Looks like the Woolies ones are best value so I may well go for these. I can sell on the ones I don’t need.

Thanks for the link.

The Woolies male tenax studs might not actually engage properly with the Mazda female receivers. Plus the threaded ones are on some strange non-metric thread, but your car will be ready for metric threaded parts. Ok if you are intending to replace all the studs on the hood cover, but chances are, that will ruin the cover.

A visit to a breakers will probably get you a set for pennies.

We have good used pop type screw in fastners for the mk1 cover 20stg for the lot plus 10stg postage .You can have whatever amount you need to fit your car .Is it four I think ??

I suspect the UK based suppliers are a tad more competitive than that, considering it’ll be a couple of first class stamps to post these, not £10 to throw in an envelope.

Come to think of it, the guy in the office that gave me his tonneau cover is trying to scrap his automatic Mk1 import so I might just ask him if I can remove the four fateners that I need.

Alternatively, I could just sell the tonneau cover and buy a Mk 2 version!

The early tonneaus came with straps, to loop around the frame; these were deleted in 1995-1996, and the later tonneaus are a terrible fit as a result. Might be worth thinking about that.

I’ve just obtained a full tonneau for my Mk1 MX5, and have found Classic Parts Shack very obliging as well as the cheapest I’ve found for Tenax Studs (www.classicpartsshack.co.uk). They’re even sending me a sample stud to try before buy. Hope this is helpful to other members since I feel sure you must have got yours by now!

The Mk 2/2.5’s also had the straps to loop around the hood frame .
