Available from premiumparts_eu on eBay:
Brake Caliper w/ Bracket Front Left for Mazda MX-5 III NC 2005-2014 1.8 2.0
The complete assembly is only £55.99 with bracket, slider pins, pad clips and copper washers.
Does anyone have any experience with these units. especially good reasons not to buy?
Hi, thanks for the fast reply. and welcome. My front nearside brake gets distinctly hotter than the offside after a short run and i am concerned that this is an early warning sign of a failing calliper, sticking sliders or piston most likely so the advertised complete assembly would be a quick swap and drive, and about the same price as a full recon kit.
I don’t have sufficient space to work in my GarageBand am getting too old to work on the drive in the freezing cold so will most likely to be looking for a local mechanic to sort it…
Hi
I’m inclined to agree with you though the site does claim it meets international quality assurance levels.
My local Euro parts do Pagid exchange units for around £85, (excluding refundable surcharge) but sliders, rubbers and washers would be extra. so you can see the attraction. The sellers eBay feedback is mostly good but I’m not sure how much to trust it.
Are the Pagid units ‘good’ in your opinion and do you consider Europarts to be ‘reputable’?
They seem to be a large and well established supplier
New original Mazda callipers are very expensive,
I would try Autolink for a remanufactured caliper (original Mazda refurbed) + £30 on the cost which is refundable upon returning your old. More money but you know you are getting a top quality refurbished unit from a reputable source.
Supposed to be, I’ve never had cause to have to buy one from them but most other parts from them have been great.
Caliper prices including refurbed units have shot up in price, about par for the course with most spares. Those mentioned by the OP I think I’d give a miss on, purely because they are an unknown make and I like to buy from a good known source.
They could be absolutely fine, just my opinion.
I’ve just taken a look at that particular listing in eBay. As I say I’ve no idea what they are or quality, they are careful to not show any stamped markings on the caliper and you get an awful lot for your money in that price.
I have used Bigg Red in Worcester for service kits and a front caliper refurb.
They are local to me and so I made an in-person drop-off and collect for the caliper refurb.
I gave up with reconditioned calipers (NA); after 17 years of ownership, my 1996 is onto its 3rd set of front calipers. I ended up buying new pattern calipers from Autolinkuk. UK brand but probably Chinese made. I assume Autolinkuk don’t sell bad parts.
The pattern calipers I have work fine. Rear calipers are a different matter, but for front calipers, there is not really that much to them; a casting, a piston, and some bits of rubber. The main thing to note though is that new pattern calipers cannot be reconditioned, or at least, they will not be accepted on an exchange basis.
The caliper is said to be IATF 16249, which is an automotive quality standard. I would not be surprised if these are exactly the same pattern calipers that are sold by MX5parts fpr £15 more. If these calipers are genuinely certified, the seller should be able to provide you with the certificate number and the actual manufacturer name, which won’t be parts.eu
Personally though, I wouldn’t buy off Ebay out of principle. This seller states they are in China, but with Stafford warehousing/ I would want to know the legitimate name of the British enterprise, and conduct my own research. Obviously, there is no company registered as parts_eu nor premiumparts_eu
I really disagree on the the refurbished calipers that are OE sold by a reputable Co ,that have been refurbished correct from reputable Co’s.
Of the thousands I have personally replaced, there as been no issues, rebuilt correct and fitted correct they have a good long life , its when they are not looked after with a " fit them and forget them" that gives issues ,not being serviced regularly and fitted with no lube for use and protection.
On the other hand covid land copies are complete rubbish , castings are are not good, items they are built with are inferior cheap parts, rubber seal perish by just blinking at them, they can pop without any warning the handbrake arms work loose off the spindles, there is a lot of flex from the cheap castings and metals used the list goes on, they are cheap for a reason, i have personally had to deal with plenty of the aftermath from them being fitted, i personally will not service brakes if they have been fitted or are offered for me to fit, blankly get refused, I highly do not recommend slapping covid land copies on, your life is far more valuable than saving a couple of pounds.
Now as for the pattern calipers, never been impressed with them ( they will be covid land copies too), I found them slack and to much float on the slider pins, far to much movement for my liking for something that might need to help at some point to save my old bones, it was taken straight back off and sent back, if i am repairing a roadster for anyone that will then have my name on it ,it needs to be right 100%.
So i highly recommend very good OE refurbished units, from good known Co’s or new OE units, fitted “correctly” (which is really important) and serviced once a year to pre long a long service life , mine are all still the originals on my MK 1 1.8 93 and she is used, and used hard most of the time, but they are looked after and still preform as they should.
I don’t and never will fly the flag of cheap covid land copies, from dealing with the issues that they become and bring, my life is important, as is everyone else’s I deal with around this issue with their roadsters.
