Top down! cloud burst! what to do?

so what is best to do if you are driving on an A road at 50 to 60 mph and it starts raining?

is it best to stop as soon and as quickly as possible and put the roof up?
or,
keep going and hope you pop out the other side of the cloud burst?

Keep going at a reasonable speed, definitely above 40-50mph and the rain will mostly go over the cabin area. A deluge and I’m afraid you get wet, been there before a couple of times.
Of course if safe to do so pull over and stick the hood up. We never enter a motorway if it looks like rain, hood up first but it’s not often we drive on the motorway.

If it turns to hail, then it starts to sting.

A spot of rain isn’t going to do any harm to the interior, but it gets annoying when it bounced off the dash.

As you Brits would say: keep calm and carry on.
Above 50 mph and with the windows up but roof down, no rain gets into the cabin of my MK3.75, unless it is torrential (and even then, it only slides in along the driver’s window).
Hailstones I just laugh at. Just like the other drivers, who think I am getting wet, do laugh at me.

Don’t worry about rain! Last winter I was on the A64 near York ,when I saw a gritter wagon coming in the opposite direction. It was an oh f*** moment of epic proportions . I had salt/grit everywhere in my face, hair and all over the car. So a bit of rain ? Nah, just grin and laugh !

As a cycling MX5 owner I find that comment offensive. It also encourages poor behaviour towards vulnerable road users.

It got no less tan 8 “likes” & laughs matey as well for all it was.
It also survived a few days till you cropped up.
You have not posted anything for 6 months, but suddenly choose something of zero consequence as this?
Are you serious? That being so I trust those so affected only feed from plastic spoons and are not allowed near sharp things or without their Social Worker.
Hope you never watch " Have I got New for You". You’ll need gas & air…
Lighten up man.
I’ve “chosen” for no less than 15 years NOT to be offended by homosexual inferences & hairdresser jibes for driving my 5s. Because…they are jokes.
You’ll be delighted to note it’s been “hidden” by a Mod anyway so hopefully your democratic right in this so called free speech society to have such apparently delicate sensitivities will be upheld.
I could actually feel offended to be denied the same status. But, guess what? Nah.

I thought it was funny anyway, (as a joke of course).
Also a Cycling, MX5 owner and indeed an older keen walker!!
(Maybe hidden, but still readable if you just happen to click on a certain bit).
Looks like at least 10 of us will be sent to the corner of the room and stand facing the wall for an hour!

All entitled to our own opinions I guess…to “safe” & acceptable degrees.

16 cm diameter hail is probably not top down weather.

Brought back bad memories of June 2012. Leicestershire was struck by a freak hailstorm, with ice the size of golfballs. I had to make the difficult choice of garaging the MX5 or the Alfa Romeo 147 I had at the time. Mazda went into the garage, and I had to stand by and watch the Alfa Romeo being destroyed over the next 5-10 minutes (ok not destroyed, but would have been a write off if claimed).

Afterwards, I counted about 120 dents over every panel (the curving tops of the doors were hit). The car was rendered worthless. I ended up giving it away to my Sister-in-Law, after her old run about let her down (my brother was fighting in Afghanistan at the time).

A few years later, I acquired a S-Limited that had also been damaged by the same storm. When I put that car in for a repaint, the coachworks fella complained everytime he thought he had filled a ding, he found another.

I suspect being hit by a 16cm chunk of ice from the heavens would kill you outright.

The Obergruppenfuhrer who masquerades as my wife, leaves the hood down when she goes shopping even though it was forecast rain, fortunately Tesco have a supply of blue paper to soak up the puddles on the leather seats. 🤦

I nearly always have the top down regardless of the weather. In the MK4 I just have to make sure I’m going 30+ and the windows are up. It certainly makes you plan ahead if you’re approaching traffic lights.
