Touring Wales

Hi all.

Very new to this marque. Went to buy a mini for my other half and this MX5 was in the way. I offered to move the MAZDA and that was it. Cracking car.

My main question is, we are touring Wales next week and I was going to use my car. We are thinking about using the Mazda and will sacrifice the luggage space. Is this a viable thing to do. will probably clock up around 750 miles in five days.

Apologies if this post is in the wrong place

Kind regards Grazy

It will be the best 5 days driving you will do, don’t hesitate, do it.

I’ve only ever done a few weekend type breaks in mine, then I did a full week touring Northumberland. Over 900 miles and plenty of space for two plus luggage, I definately will do it more often.

Yes, use the 5.  Minimal packing, maximum enjoyment

It will be a great help if you buy luggage suited to the boot size.  The boot will accommodate 2 x 20" holdalls, plus 2 or 3 smaller bags. or similar combinations.  Try not to use suitcases as these are not efficient in a 5s boot.  Soft bags work best.

Enjoy your trip.

We have done a few 10 day trips with ours, don’t take stuff you really won’t need. You will enjoy Wales, we were there in the Spring and it was magical.

I have always used a “Boot Bag”

Have a look at the bag online here (plenty of pictures)

They are brilliant, 5 years ago my wife and I toured Germany etc for 2 weeks in my MK 1 eunos roadster. we have always used it for weekends away when we needed more luggage space.

The bag will fit also MK2s and MK3s and this includes the MK3 with the electric roof.

It will be the best thing you will buy for your new 5 enjoy.

PM me if you need any more info.

We go to Wales every year, sometimes twice. Fantastic roads, and always well maintained. The roads along the west coast are fantastic, heading up to snowdonia and don’t forget the Llyn peninsula. Tim

We had a week in North Wales this summer (well it was sunny for 4 of the 7 days!) - but unfortunately had to take the “family” car - as Daughter & friend did not want to sit on the boot of the 5 !!!

The roads are great, I would reccommend the A470 through Snowdonia and the B4413 from Llanbedrog to Abedaron - these were old bike favourites, so would still be good in a 5.

Planning to go back next year with just me & Mrs. Toolman in the Guffalo to enjoy the driving.

Be warned though, on narrower roads, the locals do like to crack on a bit.

Do it. We can get enough for 2 weeks in the boot, so you will be fine, so much better than touring with a ‘normal’ car.

I would say no to a boot rack or boot bag simply becasue of the the noise and turbulance, plus you need mot worry abouyt leaving the car unattended.

Oh, and welcome to the addiction.

Thank you all so very much. This very active forum takes me back to my biker days.  We have made our minds up to take the MX. I would rather have owned it a bit longer before embarking  on a road trip but what the heck.

This feels like more of an adventure already.

Great advice re luggage and roads. Will post when we return.

Kindest regards

North west Wales is brilliant and they don’t have potholes. Lookup the Evo Triangle on the interwebulator.

We’ve just done a 2 week trip to France in the NC just using the boot. Plenty of room and we had to take a suit and posh frock for a special occasion.

As long as your other half doesn’t apply makeup with a shovel, you’ll be fine.

However, a trip to Wales doesn’t constitute an adventure. Very few cannibals in the area.

I usually use a couple of Samsonite bags which can, if required squash into gaps etc. or some square bags which fit in nicely.
we spend most of our mileage in Wales, brilliant country. see below
2 bags + coats, hats, wine & presents for grandkids. easy. http://s6.photobucket.com/user/pappadamjoe/media/20150612_091040_zps4n0hadds.jpg.html?sort=6&o=5

Just got back from South Wales. Great time, great place, great people and great weather. Even went for a swim at Whitesands Bay on Thursday.
