Hi, Thanks for those who replied to our question, we have now found a supplier of towbars for the Mk 1, that is the NA model. They are Watling Engineering of St Albans WWW.watling-towbars.co.uk
and if you ask nicely you may get discount for being a member of owners club. Will send this info to Soft top/Hard top mag. Towbar, ball hitch, wiring and instructions plus next day delivery for around £220.
JeezSo the guy that let you down effectively cost me ! I would have got me jabs up to date and ventured across 't Pennines wi a boot full o Yorshires finest H.2.0 and dun a straight wi yu lad
We have also just received one from Watling this week, although it cost £240 all in including delivery, but it was their detachable one. Hopefully will get it fitted this weekend ready for the bank holiday weekend when we are off to Weston-Super-Mare to try out the new tent.
I got my local garage to fit mine while the car was in for MOT and apparently it is a very simple fit utilising the bolt holes from the (discarded) tie down loops. When not in use it is a very neat, inconspicuos fitting. We also tried out our new tent and a little Erde trailer at a classic and Custom Car weekend at DoncasterWhat a laugh!! Spent the weekend camped on a works sport & social club field surrounded by gleaming mega cube Yank metal and grotesque Monster Trucks, wall to wall rock & roll music and cool ZZ Top lookalikes
I think it might be a relationship to the weight of the car. Check the Highway Code it may have something in there.
Understand restrictions on the length and weight of the trailer/caravan allowed. The weight of a braked trailer should not exceed 85% of the kerb weight of the tow car (you can find the kerb weight in your vehicle manual), and an unbraked trailer carries a gross maximum weight of 750g or half the kerb weight of the towing vehicle, whichever is the lesser. The overall length of the trailer or caravan should not be more than 7 metres, (with the exception of the A frame and hitch), and the width should not be more than 2.3m.
I have had a quick look in my hand book but can’t find any reference to towing weights. I have a copy of Liz Turner’s ‘Mazda MX5 Miata’ book, in the specifications section at the back it says braked trailer is 700 kgs max and unbraked 350 kgs max. I tow a small trailer with ours with a max all up weight of 350 kgs with no problem. I also tow a caravan with my other car and the normal rule of thumb is the max weight should not exceed 85% of the kerb weight of the tow car. This is still subject to the manufactures max towing weights.
