On the way home from work tonight traverling in front of me was a light blue mgf doing about 90 (fast for a mgf i thaught) anyway i was in the zafira not my mx
and after a few miles the mgf slowed to about 50 so i was getting ready to overtake as i thaught it was heading for the next of ramp
about 200mtrs away.
But no all of a sudden it was surrounded with smoke and pulled over very fast i did the same and jumped out with my extinguisher. but it was not a fire it was the head gasket and very badley overheated anyway the poor guy was a bit distraught saying he had only had it a week and he turned down a mk1 mx5 in favour of this heap oh s***
anyway he had no aa or rac so i towed him home after it had cooled down luckly he was less than a mile or so from home.
So he is hopeing for a refund with his 3 month gaurentee and he said he is going to get that mk1
when we parted i wished him well and told him my weekender is a mk2 he was gobsmacked
so i will be looking out for him in the near future.
Glad I choose a Mk1, I was going to buy an MGF as my first 2 seater sports car.
But after reading all the forums including the MG related one’s I decided for that very reason (HG failure) that it was too much to risk. Apparently it’s the cooling system also on these that need proper maintenance as well as the gaskets that semm to be below par. All well documented.
While I’m visiting… my mgTf does 110mph at a push. But it’s just a 120 bhp semi automatic. The mgf’s are older cars now and if the head gasket was never replaced then it is likely to blow. As someone mentioned, the k series engine was plagued by this fault. However, several mobile repair people now go around visiting owners at home to sort this problem by upgrading the gasket and doing full services for peanuts money (compared to garage costs).
Here’s one. http://www.roughluckracing.com/ I don’t know if you have, or even need this facility with an mx5?. But it might be handy to know.
I am pleased to see that even in a metro based dare i call it a roadster that this very tallented guy http://www.roughluckracing.com/
makes a good liveing sticking these things together and giving them a new lease of life well done Jon.
and i hate to admit to it but my son in law has one of these metro jobies thankfully i have never seen it on the road it seems to spend its life in the garage
Why y’all have so much hatred for mgf and mgtf cars? It’s not like you have to buy one. Roadster rage? Too much competition in the sales section? Bottom line.
I’ve only been an owner for a short time comparatively and of course I considered all options in a small convertible when buying. Ultimately though, I went with what I considered to be the best deal for very little money (£2100 for an lpg converted, semi automatic for the wifes poorly leg, 48k fsh, etc, etc…) It gives me a relative 60mpg. Bottom line won. Even though I had a £4k budget to play with. If I get hg failure, so be it. Never had a car in 50 years that didn’t break at some point and mine may well break, as I cane it at least 50 miles daily. But who can say for sure? What I do know is that there is a man who can fix me up cheap and I don’t even have to get out of bed. Have to add that it hasn’t missed a beat for the first 4000 miles.
To be fair, if we all knew the future, or had the money that was made by the metro, we’d all be driving Ferraris. Will my daughter hate me when she buys an mx5? For 62p a litre. Bottom line… Who cares?
Haha thankyou :). Just so you don’t think I’m a stick in the mud. I don’t mind a bit of rivalry and banter at all. It can be quite entertaining. Comes with working in a prison psychiatric unit I suppose. Just don’t bore me with stories of how you dismembered your victims. I’ve heard it all before.
Anyway, about the tow… I’m sure we’d all do the same for each other given the chance.
Here’s one I towed earlier. Just kidding of course… I love your cars.
The thing to remember about forums is that even on a forum dedicated to just one car people will still fight to the death about how many characters should be in signatures.
People like to hate, keeps them from getting all introspective and thoughful.
oops i did not mean to set the cat amongst the pigeons but hey ho (just because i dont like the mgf it does not mean its the law) there are loads of cars and bikes i dont like but it is just my opinion but to be honest i do hate rovers with a passion one let me down once big time and cost me loads of dosh in fact in all my driving years it is the only car manufacturer that i think can not build cars for toffee
but i do like all jap cars (this also is not the law)
“one let me down once big time and cost me loads of dosh”… Haha by that measure we would have to ban marriage. lol I used to work at Longbridge rover. So, I’ll shut up before it gets political. When in hole, stop digging. I gathered that you like jap cars, as you’re driving the quintessential British sports car. I’m sure I read that somewhere.
