Toyo Proxies any good?

I need 2 new rear tyres and I seem to hear about Toyo
Proxies a lot on the MX5 forums. Can anyone advise me if they are any good?

The
new tyre ratings seem damming giving them an “E” rating for wet weather braking
which is very poor.

With discounts, I can get 4 new £50-£60 “C” tyres “C” for the
price of 2 “premium” brands. Any advice welcome.

The MX-5 world and a lot of other car communities love the T1R. The honest truth though it is that is only average, there are plenty of equal and better tyres. Don’t get overly wrapped up in the Euro Labeling, in fact there are tyres now being produced specifically to have good figures in these tests that don’t translate into good on road performance.

My personal recommendation would be the Kumho KH31 which I can mail order to you for Less than £43 each or if you happen to be in the Northampton area fit for £180 with OC discount.

You won’t die by fitting the Toyo though.

Ok for the money. They’re a cheap tyre, possibly better than some Chinese brands. And it depends which Proxe you are referring to; T1R, PX4, R888. There have been a ton of previous threads on this forum that are worth using the search function for.

T1R’S mature wih age so to speak, i didnt like them when they were new but now after a few trackdays they have scrubbed in and  are much better. I am going to try the Kumho next though, i have heard good things from people about these.

I have been happy with the T1R’s but on my Puma.

I like Toyo tyres.  The CF1 is my first choice for the “proper” car as it’s relatively cheap, well-made*, wears and grips well and gives better fuel consumption than some of the premium brands (Goodyear Hydragrip were particularly disappointing).  I’m considering Toyo Snowprox for the MX-5 this winter.

*assuming good quality wheels and a competent tyre fitter who aligns the heavy spot marked on the tyre properly, the size of the balance weights needed gives some indication of tyre consistency

 Having just come back from a weekend group trip to the 'ring let me tell you that one of our group had a 2.5NB with toyos on the front and some new cheap brand on the back (I know hes stupid for mixing!). On the first lap (damp track) he spun and nearly got rammed and it really wasnt down to him pushing too hard. After that I discovered his tyre situation, swapped fronts to back and it was like a totally different car (his words) he was very happy and continued incident free for the weekend.

He obviously had to take it a little easy in the wet and they are not the best in the world in the wet, but it still held.

 

I on the other hand had no issues at any time in my uniroyal rainsport 2’s, they were just brilliant in all the different trip conditions we had over this weekend, including the snow showers!

I believed the hype about TR1’s and I’d say they’re an average tyre. I’ll be going back to Rainsports when it’s time to replace…
