My 1.8 MK2 (2000 model) has just been towed home by Green flag from a car park in town. After long motorway run back from work (60 miles away) to Worcester meet up with my wife for coffee, returned to car park with a strange problem. Starts up ok, but as soon as you press the throttle a little it dies. Sometimes it starts and dies immediately, at others it idles ok. Green flag mechanic stuck a little electronic monitor thingy into the diagnostic port on the right of the engine (could not find OB2 port) and it reported a Throttle Position Sensor fault, along with an engine temperature sensor fault. Am I right in presuming the former is the culprit? If so, is it easy to replace the TPS? There is a used one on eBay for £20, or should I replace the whole throttle body as well? Or is it something else possibly?
There is no OBD port on the MK2 - that was only fitted when the facelift MK2.5 was manufactured.
The TPS is held in place by two small fixings with both bolt head(7mm from memory) and also philips. Unlike the MK1 there is no adjustment so just remove and replace.
In your position I would buy a used throttle body from either a MK2 or a MK2.5 - I think they are the same for all these cars. Try the TPS part first.
Given the temperature sensor fault I would expect to have to replace that too.
many thanks,
I will try replacing the TPS first and see where that gets me,
cheers,
Just about to replace TPS as suggested in earlier post. Checked Haynes manual for backup, which has note saying they don’t recommend removing the sensor on the 1996-on models, as there is no way of adjusting it afterwards without ‘special’ factory tools. Is this really the case? Removal looks straightforward. Worried about making things worse than they are now.
Any advice most welcome,
many thanks in advance,
John
