Trackday insurance, what do I need?

Hi Guys, just signed up as a OC member. I got my first Mk1 Roadster in December 2011. I spent some money on it to get it the way I like it. I like it so much I have just got a second one primarily for track days and car control days, so as not to risk damage and wear to my main car. The car is insured under a classic car policy for all of £138 (no NCD earned). I had to go for a classic car policy as I don’t have any NCD to put on the car as my NCD s are already assigned to other cars.

What insurance do I need to get to do track days? I paid £425 for this new car so I am not really worried about damage to my car. Do I need 3rd party insurance? Can I buy insurance for individual track days (never been on one, not sure how many I will do).

Cheers

Looking through my insurance doccuments it seems I am covered to Club organised Track days. Well thats something I suppose. Any ideas what I need to other days and MazdaOntrack events (or do these come under Club track days?)

Is yours a Club Footman James policy ? They usually come with free track day cover up to a certain number a year on any formerly organised track days (and nto just a Club event), but then only on tracks recognised by them. I think you need to advise them when attending as well to get the cover. Check with your insurer for the details I suggest.

So far as I am aware track day cover is never 3rd party, it only covers you and your car and will have a high excess. Again, this is only my understanding, but as all parties on a track day sign a disclaimer and are there at their own risk they can’t claim against you if an accident happens. So it begs the question if driving a cheap MX-5 on a track what cover do you need ? Possibly none I suggest. Interrested to hear what other people do and think on this ?

Hi

I have done quite a few track days, and as car is not worth a lot, I don’t bother with track day insurance.

If car was badly damaged would buy another cheap mx5 and use damaged one for spares.

As Martin said you sign a disclaimer and all drive at your own risk.

There is no 3rd party liability on trackdays, that is basically what the indemnity is all about, accepting the risk of being on track.

Motorsport insurance works on this principal, you are insuring your car against various incidents. You can insure against just about anything including mechanical damage, it is just a case of how much you want to spend.

However, as is said here the value of trying to insure a car with a value of £450, is just not worth the agro. The excess will be more than the value of the car and even if you have a car in stunning condition its resale book value is peanuts these days.

You can insure for a fixed cost, especially if you have built the car and there a labour content involved, however you still have to hit these cars quite hard to cause enough damage to get past the excess point. A dented wing, broken light and bent steering rod can be fixed for a couple of hundred pounds or much less if you know where to look.

Thanks Nick thats just what I wanted to hear. I bought a 2 nd cheap Roadster just for this pupose. Not worried about my car but did not want to risk any 3rd party liablility.

I’ll be booking myself on on the next MOT car control day to start off.
