Transmission noise MX5 nc 06

Hi all

We brought our first mx5 about a year ago and love it, so much so we are looking to maintain the car and do a few upgrades, however before we do that i wanted to get the car to 100% health first. I have it in for a health check at Roddersons soon but i thought i would ask for you advice as well.

When i drive the car around 30 miles per hour in gear but  off the gas i can hear a noise which sounds like the creak of an old sailing ship, under load the noise goes away.

I crawled under the car to listen when the car is idling and i get occasional noise but its not persistent in what i believe to be the gearbox area.

Now i dont have ramps or a drive so this diagnosis is difficult for me but have anyone heard of similar before?

Mine’s had a slight “chattering” type noise from the transmission since new, happens when fully warmed up & I lift off the gas at low speeds - other folk have had the same issue & I think it’s been discussed on here, consensus of opinion is that many NCs do that & it’s nothing to worry about - mine certainly hasn’t got any worse during the 6 years & 29,000 miles since new.

If it is anything different with your car, I’m sure that Paul Roddison will sort it - he knows these cars inside out.

Thats good news, i was getting nervous about a potential big bill looming. Thanks for responding

The NC’s transmission is pretty agricultural out of the box, but it might be worthwhile changing, and upgrading, the gearbox and LSD – if your car has one – oils. It certainly helped in both the NCs I’ve owned. With a car of that age you might also find that the gearlever shift boot has split, letting more transmission noise enter the cabin.

PS: It’s well worth letting people know exact car details in your signature.

Thanks for the response, i’ve updated my profile and working out how to take a clearer picture of my motor :S

The car is with Paul now, conclusion, release bearing on clutch is a little worn and the belt tensioner on the engine needs attention. Paul also spent time with me explaining this that and the other. 10/10 for service :stuck_out_tongue:
