Transmission Slippage 3rd & 4th Gear

Hi all, I’ve got a MK1 1.6 5sp Turbo with about 240bhp tap. Have only owned it a year and have just put it back on the road. Finding the transmission slips significantly when accelerating in 3rd & 4th gear (no issues in 1st & 2nd). Is this likely to be a clutch wearing out and anyone recommend a reasonable clutch to handle that sort of power without me having to do a gym session to work it? Many thanks in advance, Simon

Usual tell tale is to put a manual car into 4th gear then accelerate hard from 40mph. If the revs rise quickly without picking up speed and you can hear it slipping then the clutch is on its way out. You can drive around it for a while. I can’t speak for the mx5 specifically but I have used act heavy duty organic clutches before and for an uprated clutch it was very nice, not too heavy and no snatchy engagement like a segmented ‘paddle’ style clutch.

Many thanks for your reply, yes that happens from 40mph…well more 60!
