Just spent a rather discouraging afternoon researching my renewal. Bizarrely, despite having had a quiet, claim-free year to date, I’m now being quoted higher prices with a higher excess: a double whammy.
I’m in my 20s, no claims, no convictions, am in a safe postcode (as far as I know) and drive a standard 1.8i UK Merlot as my daily driver. I’d like to do some modifications (reasonable ones, like a roll bar) and so far the only reasonable quotes I’ve had are:
Adrian Flux: £610 with £450 excess, no modifications; leaps to over £900 with modifications Sky: £800 with £350 excess, no modifications Sky: £856 with £350 excess, various modifications
(The Sky quotes include the MX5Nutz forum discount.)
Footman James wouldn’t even quote, for the second year running. Maybe it’s time for the OC to look for a different affiliate insurer?
I’m still rather disappointed with what I’ve had so far; Sky look like probably being the one to go for. Is there any specialist insurer I should try that I’ve missed? I’ve done the usual comparison website searches.
If your not going FI then you would be better off talking to A-plan in Bletchley 01908 271 771 as they do the MX5 stuff only they won’t touch FI referring you to Thatcham.
Footman James again managed to quote me over twice my renewal. If you’re not over retirement age then they just take the piss.
Ade Flux came out with the best quote by a long chalk, but I got Sky to match it as I was insured with them already.
Sky are great for mods as the guys and gals there are enthusiasts themselves and understand what you are talking about. Actually a pleasure to deal with.
The comparision sites where bloody useless this year with the cheapest being £550 + £450 exess (seems to be this years scam), the post office was the best at £960
I agree that the club could and should find a better deal for it’s members than Aon/FJ. My understanding is that the number of policies they are selling to members has dropped right off (not surprisingly) and with it the income to the club. Adrian Flux gives a discount for being a member of a recognised club (which we are) of more than Aon/FJ’s (alleged) 15% anyway.
Same here - seems their “call you back” doesn’t work! - I finished up calling them (glad I did - saved me £50+ compared to OC discount supplier and others…).
My son, 22 yrs old and with 3 years no-claims, has just insured his 53 plate BMW Z4 2.5i kept in Bristol, fully comp with Elephant.co.uk for £680 with (I think) a £400 excess.
Our experience has shown that only Admiral (part of the same group as Elephant) got close - in fact they were slightly lower than Elephant’s first quote until he rang them back
…so if he can insure a Z4 for that I am sure they would do a better deal for your MX-5 unless there are some exclusions e.g. mods that would interfere
One way of reducing your premium is to have a parent on the policy (even if they will never drive it) - it can drop the premium significantly - daft as it may sound
Thanks for all the replies. I’ve done a load more phoning round and got some more quotes.
Elephant - around the £800 mark with no modifications; jumps to around £1000 with a roll bar. Richard Eggar - wouldn’t quote RH Classic - don’t think would offer sufficient mileage A-Plan - currently waiting for them to get back to me can’t get me onto the specialist MX-5 scheme because of my age. For a standard car they’re quoting nearly £900. Greenlight - nearly £900 with all modifications; £450 excess though Premium Choice - over £900 with modifications and £700 without as they won’t recognise one of my NCD years. Pity, since they were looking competitive at around £600 with a £300 excess.
Funnily enough, Bell phoned me up and offered me a better price than before…so I might end up sticking with them after all!
Performance Direct: ~£730 no modifications, £350 excess; with modifications, over £1000.
Bell have offered me a better renewal quote, even with modifications, but they won’t cover the full cost of the modifications themselves, and won’t cover them at all if I go on a multi-car policy (with their parent Admiral)…does anyone know of any insurance company that offers cover just for the modifications?
I’m declaring various small exterior modifications (glass heated window, blind spot mirrors), change of stereo, change of speakers, uprated brake pads, slighty uprated exhaust, and a roll bar, the latter, bizarrely, seeming to be the worst culprit.
I’d very much like to supercharge at some stage but for the moment, having the money to do it is out of the question, before even talking of insurance!
