I am biased as hell because I’ve loved TSW wheels since when the old 17" EVO’s were the wheels of choice.
I currently have 16"x7.5" metallic black TSW Hockenheim R’s on my MX-5, It might have effected the handling a little (OK, It tram lines a bit and the ride quality has gone bye bye even with slightly over-sized (205/40/16) tyres ) but its still on it’s standard suspension at the moment, But I do think they look good.
When I’ve totally sh*gged the tyres on them I’m putting my 15"x6.5" TSW Alpines back on till I strip and powder coat the Hockenheim’s gloss black (I got them off Ebay with all four rims slightly scuffed, So I really need to tidy 'um up a little), Then I just need some new tyres and there they’re back on the car [H]
I went for 16" wheels because I wanted extra clearance for an RX-7 four pot calliper and 270mm “Sport” disc upgrade I have planed… After I got them I found the ba$tard’s would still need spacers as the callipers foul the spokes [:^)].
So, To summarise,
TSW make strong, Well made wheels. (I’ve yet to experience lacquer coming off one), But most designs they do are a tad heavy.
15" wheels are the best for handling, Comfort and tyre prices.
16"/17"/18" wheels WILL hurt your back with the harsh ride, They’ll spend most of there time in the air because the dampers can’t control there weight and your wallet will end up crying with the cost of tyres… But they look frigin’ ace [:D]
As I said, I might be a little biased, But I’ve always thought they make good wheels.
TSWs are massivly heavy wheels always have been.
I’ll give you that.
Mind you, My '5 doesn’t seem to mind the 15" TSW Alpines,
I don’t get the “Rattling over bumps because the dampers can’t keep up” that I do with my 16’s, And It handles well on the 15’s.
I would have just flogged the 16’s on once I realised they STILL wouldn’t clear the intended brake upgrade, But the fact is that I like how they look on the car. If when I’ve upgraded my suspension the dampers still can’t cope then I might think about flogging them and going back to the 15’s full time. I’ll just wait and see
Yes, There heavier than the standard wheels, But then most cheaply available wheels are.
Thanks for the replies, very constructive & much appreciated.
Just bought some today, they have some strange arrangement to get the correct pitch of the studs. Good wheels though. [:D]
