Turret oil and boots

Hello all, I have a 2009 5 speed NC2. Gear changes seem a bit notchy and I’m thinking that it might be worth changing/topping up the turret oil.

It looks reasonably straightforward, and I’ve watched YouTube videos of the process. However, on one of these the guy had to change the upper and lower boots along with the nylon(?) bush and all the washers / seals. They were either in poor condition or he had to cut them to remove them.

So, for those who have done this, did you have to replace the boots/bush/seals, or was this guy just unlucky?

Thanks

I’d start with a transmission oil change first and see how it feels - my previous mk3.5 was notchy, and was transformed with an oil change and clutch pedal travel adjustment. Make sure the filler plug will loosen before draining….and use new crush washers (some garages/dealers don’t do this as standard, so you won’t know how used yours are).

There’s loads of debate about which is the best oil to use - a bit of research maybe required - a friend of ours sells oils (a lot to Lotus and BMW M owners club members) and reckons Redline and Miller are the most consistent in quality - personal choice at the end of the day.

turret oil on mine was easy enough, no parts required, don’t think i put any oil in in the end as seemed to be enough in there.

Thanks. I got the transmission oil changed by the garage last year, but pretty certain that they didn’t do the turret. I think I have some of that oil left over, so would use that in the turret.

Do a search on the forum, type in “ NC gear change”

You will be surprised how much info there is on this topic.

It’s a typical replacement item on the Mk1/Mk2 those upper and lower shift boots. Not heard many need replacing on the Mk3, alway a first.
You can check the gear selector plate, these can wear on the left side but the shift boots should be ok, mine were on the previous 14 year old Mk3 last time I looked.
You can get a small plastic syringe to suck out the old oil in the turret and replace with fresh.

Gear selector plate…

My local dealers looked completely blank when I asked whether they changed/topped up turret oil, so don’t be surprised.

Adjusting the clutch is a simple driveway process (you just need to be a bit of a contortionist to see what you’re doing). Step by step is posted in the tech section of the forum.
