Turret Oil NC2 6 Speed

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC2/MK3.5
  2. I’m based near: Belfast
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Turret Oil

I apologise in advance for this being yet another turret oil post. I promise I’ve scoured around but unable to see anything definitive for the NC2 6 speed.

Essentially, after two instances where first/reverse were extremely difficult to engage I’ve decided to refurb the top end of the gearbox.

I’ve bought a metal reverse lockout plate. I haven’t tried it yet so can’t comment on how good/bad it is and not sure I want to share the link for it yet.

I’ve dismantled the top end, and this is what I’ve found:

  • The rubber boot is perishing leaving lots of crud in the turret, will order a new one
  • The turret was completely dry aside from surface grease that was black
  • The plastic lockout plate had definite signs of wear

My question is, does the NC2 need turret oil? If yes, does the previous recommendations apply; fill the turret to the bottom ball and grease the upper ball?

Yes it needs turret oil and grease on the upper ball pivot. Don’t fill the turret to the top, any oil will do btw but gear oil if you have any left over from a service.

About here in the pic below the fill level should be, no higher.

For the avoidance of doubt, that’s just above the selector cup, correct?

I’d probably be syringing a little out in the picture shown. When the stick shift is refitted the oil in my opinion should just cover the cup on the end.:+1:

Thank you!

Do all NC gearboxes take oil in that turret?
Mine is a 25AE (NC3? NC3.75?); also 6 speed gearbox.
Also, which kind of grease should be used on the ball? General grease ok?
Thank you.

Yes yours will have turret oil, lithium grease for the pivot.:+1:

Thank you for confirming that. :+1:

I finally found some time to do it and found that it was completely dry!
Surprisingly, the plastic bush at the bottom of the gear lever/shaft is still in very good condition.
It’s apparent that the gear lever hasn’t been removed since it left the factory.

Took some photos that may help others in the future:

Once the centre console is off, remove the four bolts securing the metal plate.
Please note that the rubber boot comes off together with the metal plate and that plastic white ring (arrowed) just needs to be pulled up, off the shaft; no need to cut it off!
Also note that there are 4 slits on the rubber boot; these seem to be there originally, possibly to help the rubber flex and fold and to stop it tearing???

This second rubber boot just lifts off.
Then simply remove the 3 bolts securing that black plastic plate and lift off the shaft.

This is what I found; bone dry!

Gave it a good clean and refilled it up to that green arrow with leftover gear oil.
Some lithium grease on the ball pivot and re-assemble.

Has it made any difference to the feeling of the gear shift?

Also, what oil did you use to fill the turret, and how much did it take?

(It’s a job that’s on my “to do” list).

Didn’t get to try it yet and because the car was stone cold, it’s difficult to say either way. The centre console and other trims are still out as I’m about to swap my head-unit. However I’d say it’s definitely worth doing; it’s easy enough anyway.

I had some oil left from when my gearbox was last serviced, (Red Line MT-90 GL-4) so I just used that. It took about 150-200ML; I didn’t measure, I just poured it in until it was level with the top of the selector cup (where the green arrow points to); any more than that and the ball pivot will be in the oil, which isn’t necessary since the Lithium grease will lube that bit.

The slits are not in the rubber boot by design, they are there because the boot is old.
