Two Gas strut questions , re Mk 3 NC

1 The two gas struts on the boot lid hold the lid up but do not assist in raising it? seems to me that they should but I cant be sure as the car is new to me ? does it sound like they need replacing ?

2 has anyone fitted gas struts to the bonnett ?? if so any pointers would be appreciated

The boot struts do not raise the lid. I have fitted genuine Mazda bonnet lifers…they do assist in lifting the bonnet. They were more expensive than other aftermarket ones, but from others I’ve seen, are worth the extra.

  1. That’s how it works, sounds normal to me.
  2. I think some members have fitted kits (struts) to the bonnet to aid lifting.

To those who are considering fitting gas struts to their bonnets (ND in my case) be aware that in with the cheap kits from China, (about £20 delivered, and worth buying just for the brackets) are two gas struts that are too long, and too strong. If you can manage to fit them, they lift the bonnet too high, and when closing the whole bonnet and hinge area distorts, which obviously isn’t great.
I used 300mm x 100n support, which is just enough to support the bonnet when open but does not stress the hinge area. 200n would probably also be okay, and assist in opening more. I think the ones supplied were about 500n, as well as being too long.
eBay, about £12 pair.
Hope it helps someone.
