I’m fitting new wheels and can’t decide which tyres to go for - any experience of the above?
Currently on Michelin Energy and they seem to slide around in the wet a lot which I want to avoid - not too worried about wear as I don’t do a high mileage.
My choice would be Eagle F1 next time if youy milage is not high then toss a coin, I wouldnt chose Michelin unless i was going to the scrapyard anyway.
I currently have Yokohama’s they are Sh1t hot in the dry and slip just a little in the wet, just enough to make you clench your buttocks and then smile.
Only my opinion though, not driven on F1’s I have heard they are about the best for a 5
I have a pair of Avon ZV3 on the rear (with 14" wheels) and there ok in the dry but in the wet you can easily get the tail out if your not careful. Although if they were on the front as well/or, they might not be the best. If it wa me though I would either get 4 Goodyear GSD-3’s or Toyo T1-R as these seem to be the most recommended.
Whatever tyres you get make sure the pressures are appropriate at around 26-27 psi (well depending on what size wheels your getting.) otherwise you mite find the car has undesirable characteristics!!
Cheers for the advice - might avoid the ZV3s then if they are slippy in the wet - did check out general tyre review sites but as the reviews varied so much I put it down to how they work on different cars - so wanted to hear how they worked on other MX5s.
Might check out the Toyo T1-R - did ask about the Goodyear Eagles but the supplier said he couldn’t get them in 14" which is what i’m switching to…
The Goodyears are tricky to find for 14"ers, looking at mytyres you could get em mailed and fitted at a trusted garage. THe standard tyres normally fitted to 14" rims is in 185/60 R14 size but if you wanted Toyo T1-R you might have to have get them in 195/55 R14 guise. -I’ve read somewhere that they will fit ok on 14" wheels though without problem.
Not the cheapest tyres but you get what you pay for!
