Is the speed rating really all that important, so long as at least matches what the OEM tyres were? I presume the difference between W and V is very minor changes in construction or compound?
PilotSport 4 is awesome, but they are also the most expensive. I find Eagle F1 Assy 5 nearly as good but a fair bit cheaper. You may want to considering getting 215/45 R17, they offer a little more grip and are often cheaper.
i currently have 205’s but next i will be switching to the 215’s.
mostly for cosmetic reasons.
when viewed from the front the 205 look like their too narrow for the rim while the 215 dosnt
Anyone running Kuhmo tyres? I still think the pilot sports but these are £50 per corner less, I’ve been happy with them on other cars before and been happy with them but it’s not always the same on every car.

Daily driver has them on too, can’t really fault them despite some saying they are from the budget end of the tyre selection, reasonably priced and suit the MX-5.
Yes, I run 215/45 17 Kumho PS71’s on my NC1 without any drama, wet or dry. I actually use them in the wet on track when my semi slicks struggle. They’re a good pocket friendly deal.
I was told a while ago by a local tyre dealer to consider changing any tyre after about three years due to the tyre carcus deforming, or wearing, regardless of how much tread they have left. So pick a tyre consumate with expected mileage, if you’re only doing a few thousand miles a year, a cheap budget tyre is perfectly adequate, if you expect to do 10’s of thousands a year, a better quality tyre that will normally be expected to do higher mileage should be considered.
Personally the driving I do I can’t out perform the level of grip my budget tyres give me, in dry, or wet…£50 each from blackcircles, i cant even remember the make !
Unless you are driving about 150mph constantly I wouldn’t bother if they are V or W rated. PS 3 and 4 are regarded as the best but I couldn’t find a local tyre shop that had any in my size. Went for Continental Premium and very happy with them. Previous tyres were Toyo TR1, were useless putting power down in anything but a completely dry road.
I have been looking at tyre options for my ND2, currently on the original Bridgestones. After checking the Tyre Review channel on YouTube the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 cropped up. It appears to be the dogs danglers.
Checked the price on asdatyres.co.uk and I was amazed to see them advertised at £91.55 each in 215/45 R17 87Y. If you buy four tyres you also receive a £40 voucher for Asda which looks almost irresistible to me.
Just been online to order these tyres and found that when you get to the checkout they add £15 per tyre delivery charge! Outrageous! The price is almost exactly the same as Mytyres fully delivered price. Asda still give £40 of vouchers to spend in the shop though which is half a dozen free bottles of red.
That’s fine until you try to do an emergency stop in the wet or need to swerve to avoid an accident. On budget tyres you will have the accident. Guaranteed.
Your insurance company might take a dim view if the rating is different from the OE spec if you need to claim. By dim view I mean, use it as a reason not to pay out

Only if you are foolish enough to go to a speed rating lower than specified and designed for the car.
A V rated tyre has a design speed up to 149MPH which is more than adequate for the standard road car.
The “Tyre Mark Information” page in Specifications tells you what to use. “Choose the proper tyres for your vehicle using the following tyre mark information”
Just because they put W rated tyres on from new doesn’t mean you have to always use W rated.
The “Load” rating is just as important.
Unless I’m mistaken NC 2L Sport ‘W’ rated tyre. NC 2L SE ‘V’ rated tyre. Same engine.
When I was looking at replacement tyres some decades ago for an astra GTE 16V I was debating a lower speed rated tyre but the man behind the desk said it’s not just about outright speed it’s also about how much torque your car is capable of putting through the tyres. I don’t know to this day if that is correct or not.
not much difference in torque and if there is too much torque white smoke and noise happens. bloke behind desk was telling porkies. The speed rating is about how fast the tyre can rotate within the rated load and its certified not to explode
