Tyre lifespan (in months) question

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC 1.8
  2. I’m based near: __glasgow
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _tyres_

Hi, just over six years ago I fitted a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres to my MX-5. In that time I’ve done about 18000 miles of fairly sedate driving. There is plenty of tread left and the tyres look fine to my inexpert eye. However, I’m very conscious of their age. Should I be changing them now?

I’d only change them if they have impaired the driving safety/feel of the car. If they are visually ok no perishing or cracks (check inside the treads too) keep them going a little longer. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell whether they have ‘gone off’ being it’s a gradual thing, only you can feel that.

Agree with Mick AP. UV from sunlight can also reduce tyre life, so generally will last longer if garaged.

Thanks. The car has been parked in the street outside my house, so I’ll have to factor in the UV issue.

If parked the same way round each time, one side may get cracks before the other side. So check both sides.

Thanks all. I took the car to the local tyre place today and they told me the tyres are fine, so i might hold onto them for a little longer. They did identify an issue the front wheels but that’s a different question for the forum!
