Tyre rotation problem

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2.0 R

  2. I’m based near: __

  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __
Hi guys,I had 4 ps5,s fitted and after about 4k I swopped front to rear which made the car pull left on acceleration and the other wat on decell, swopped them back and it was perfect
Tyres have now done 12k so swopped again to even out wear and it’s doing the same thing but not as bad
    Any ideas ?

Has the wheel alignment been checked?

You mention you swap front to rear, on the ND the rears go directly forward and the fronts go back and across:

Not sure exactly how much of a difference it would make but worth noting.

Also, have you checked the tread depths, it could be some uneven wear?

I had exactly the same behaviour, discovered after rotating the tyres. It’s quite unnerving to start with and then just plain annoying plus dangerous at anything above moderate speeds.

I took it to C&C in Bisley who specialise in MX-5s. It took a while to pinpoint it but turned out to be simple -just a wheel that needed to be re-balanced. Part of a balance weight had fallen off.

It was almost in balance but wasn’t noticable on the back axle. Obviously, when being on the front exposed the symptoms.

Yeh all good and even

Done when tyres change,I’m getting it rechecked
Thanks

Thanks no vibration just puls weird

Mine didn’t vibrate either, just pulled weird after rotating the tyres.

Different circumference due to tyre wear will do that, with an LSD you will notice 0.5-1.0mm tyre tread difference.

I’ve always swapped front to rear wheels on both cars to get even tyre wear from a set of tyres. Never had a problem with them doing this. I’d probably go with checking the balancing (lost weight) or pressures👍

And make sure you havent changed direction of rotation by accident

I had my wheels powder coated, the guy who coated them, removed and refitted the tyres, trouble was when I got them back id absolutely no idea which wheel went where.
It’s was awful to drive.
I opted for 4 new tyres in the end.

Ps5’s are directional so you can only swap the same side front to back do not swap them left to right

According to Michelin website -

MICHELIN Pilot Sport5 tyre is an asymmetric tyre, which facilitates the tyre rotation on the car to optimize longevity.

I might be getting confused they have outside written on them i thought they had direction written on them too
Il have a look tomorrow not at home at the moment
I might be getting mixed up with the rainsport 5s on my mx5 the ps5s are on my st

They can only have outside or direction not both. Outside means it’s assymetric, diection on directional.

Summer, winter, all season, directional, assymetric, speed rating, load rating, wet grip, fuel economy, noise level… so much to think about.

Was so much simpler when I first started driving. Just went for the cheapest crossply remould available.

As did my Mum on our ancient 1951 Morris Minor. She was annoyed they only lasted 800 miles on the back wheels.
Then the neighbour snitched on me drifting it round the right angle bend at the end of our road instead of slowing down.
I had to pay for a new pair of remoulds out of savings. But I did manage to haggle half price at the tyre place, “Only two months and 800 miles?”

Colway IIRC - £3 each for a Wolseley Hornet. A set lasted 600 miles if you had the Moulton suspension and no dampers fitted.

I’ve a 2007 MX5 2.0 Sport and had exactly the same problem, pulling to the left on acceleration and to the right when backing off.I had all four wheels refurbished so impossible to know where they were previously fitted.I swapped both fronts to the rear and problem solved. They are Davanti tyres with almost the same tread depth and non rotational.

Very few tyres are directional these days, it quite an old concept. Both the tyres you mention are asymmetric, as are most. There are some motorsport tyres that are still directional and as regards direction and rotation, many gravel rally tyres they have both an outside face and a rotation as they are made as separate left and right tyres.
