Tyre sealant replacement

  1. My model of MX-5 is: D
  2. I’m based near: earth
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: this planet

Well that didn’t go as planned - probably shouldn’t rely on silly answers…

The question is what do you do when your sealant goes out of date?
I’ve bought a replacement once and not used it - do I now have to buy another or just wing it?

As they’re only cheap to buy, I’d just replace it.
Less than £20 might get you home instead of waiting and the cost of a breakdown truck.

You are better having something like this 6pc Black Car Tyre Puncture Repair Kit - By Blackspur | Rinkit.com
You do not get a messy tyre, they are easy to use and they work. I did over a 1000 miles on a repair.

Buy the RAC replacement tyre sealant and it has no expiry date. This one is from ebay but probably can be purchased elsewhere cheaper: RAC Emergency Tyre Sealant Puncture Repair Flat For Audi Car 300ml No Expiry | eBay UK

Not in the ND probably but earlier cars can have sealants that, if used, the tyre has to be replaced as it can’t be repaired. This was the case with my ‘08 TT so probably the same with my ‘07 MX.
I carry a modern sealant/ inflator available for a few quid.
Fortunately haven’t tested it yet in the dark, in p!ssing rain, on the OS wheel,on a busy road.

This is one of the reasons I’ve just got myself a space saver wheel for my NC. I know the normal wheel won’t go in the boot but I’ll just leave it sticking out and strap the boot down.

I keep meaning to get something like that for both of my cars. In an emergency to get you out of trouble it’s probably better than sealant, who knows?

I do, it did and it was.

That’s very belt and braces! I must admit to buying a spacesaver for theVolvo V60 but that does have a bit more boot space.

Thats the ones i bought. Seemed like a good deal

I had a puncture in my NC last year at Leshuttle on my way to France. A screw had gone into the tread. I put Slime in it which sorted the problem. Then i had it repaired in France which he was able to do without removing the tyre. When i got back i had the wheels refurbished and the guy cleaned out the Slime and re did the repair and it still sits there today.

I have something similar. But it occurred to me you need to be able to find the nail and get the tyre into a position (whilst still on the car) to be able to use the kit. Might be quite problematic on a rear tyre?

A similar thought had occurred to me.

So I have a kit similar to Malc’s and a can of tyre sealant in the boot - a modern Holt’s version without expiry and that also states it won’t damage the tyre and can be washed out.

  • No damage to tyre guaranteed
  • Drive up to 100 miles
  • Washes out of tyres easily after use

With this approach it at least gives me some roadside options :+1:

You are correct. I have a scissor jack and appropriate hardware to remove the offending wheel so making the job easier.
The ND has the same jack fastening fixtures as the NC. These are behind the right hand trim in the boot.

I use the “stop & go” tire plugger kit.
Carry one under the motorcycle seat as well as one in the boot of the MX-5.

Those stop & go kits look really interesting. Have you ever had to use it in anger on your mx5? They are a bit pricey but quite worth it if they work well. Is the bike kit version ok for bigger car tyres too?
Thanks

My last puncture was a roofing nail. Fortunately I was thirty metres from a garage at the time. That looks an interesting addition to the boot space and would have been the ideal solution.
Hopefully we will have more that just the one anecdote so far on how peeps have fared?
I assume you can use the breakdown services?
I did this once because I was in charge in the workplace and wasn’t allowed to leave the building to do it myself. I remember this because the rather grubby Alfa Male gave me a very disparaging look when reporting that the job was completed. For some people, changing your own wheels marks you as a male of the species😀

Have used it once on my Leon and multiple times on various motorbikes.
Not yet needed to use it on the MX-5

All of the repaired tyres worked perfectly until time to replace them due to normal wear.

A friend of mine got this in his bike tyre. If you are going to get a puncture make it a good one!
