What tyre sizes do people use on 14 inch wheels ?
Most people stay stock at 185 x 60 x 14 and in 15" at 195 x 50 x 15. It is mostly above that size that people tend to play about with different tyre sizes.

Hi,
Foregive me if this a load of rubbish, but I have seen somewhere, that 195/50/14 was a better size for, I think Toyo tyres, because of the softer side walls?
Going down to 195/50R14 will reduce your ground clearance by well over half an inch (13.5mm), give you cause to declare your tyres as a modification to your insurer and reduce your gearing (giving a slight increase in acceleration but also an increase in noise and fuel consumption).
Toyo do the T1R in 195/55R15, but that tyre in that size is dreadful and bettered in almost every respect* by the Toyo CF1 which is cheaper and available in the standard 185/60R14 size. I’d never waste £30 on a T1R in that size again.
I get through a lot of tyres, and on 14" wheels I stick to 185/60R14 for road use, and occasionally 175/65R14 for comedy sidewaysness on tracks.
* the T1R might give better dry traction in a straight line, but then it should as it’s softer than butter and also a wider tyre. Dry cornering grip is dreadful, as is steering feel.
Thanks Capt.Muppet. It obviously was rubbish wot I rote ,
and thanks for your comments re Toyo’s as I am currently looking for a pair for the rear of my 5, and CF1’s were on my list with a question mark.
Personally I want a “safe” tyre, as going sideways around roundabouts is only good for the dry cleaners!
This being my first 5, I am feeling my way a bit with tyres and handling.
Normally going into a tyre supplier and getting anything, round and black that fits, now I seem to have to consider angles, offsets, profiles, symetry (Not only can’t I spell it, I have no idea what it means), weight loads, speed ratings. .
Re tyre size, I did take a look at the Vredestein web site and they do offer a couple of different options for 14inch wheels.
The CF1s are unremarkable, but in a good way - they do everything just like you expect them to, with no flaws or faults. I’d happily buy another set.
People who have had them have raved about Goodyears in 185/60R14 - there is probably some useful feedback in the huge tyre feedback thread hidden on here somewhere.
CF1’s are actually good on MX-5 as the Captain said.
Where are you based Dowot?
