Tyres "Perished" Advisory?

Colway remolds, if you survived them, you did well!

What tyres are you using?!
Other than my first ND year, I’ve NEVER done 5K miles per year (usually much less) in a single car, yet never have had (touch wood) a tyre perishing advisory.

I think the last ones to perish on the Roomie were Goodyear Efficient Grip, and before that the OE Dunlops, can’t remember the model. 16", 45 profile. It’s actually averaged 4,600 miles over 10 years so far. The Dunlops were terrible. I was convinced we had a knackered drive shaft judging by the noise from the front but it was magically cured when we changed the tyres.

Last year I took the original Yokohama V105 Advan Sport off my 2017 MX-5 (1.5). No cracks, I’ve just checked the one I saved when I replaced them - they had 3.5-4mm left, but one got a screw in right on the corner so I swapped them for a new set of the same.

I really like them so didn’t experiment with anything else, not that there’s much choice in 195/50R16. Not at all surprised to find the one I brought home (in case the same happens again, I have a spare of some kind) has a very stiff sidewall. Lovely tyres to drive although I’m not a driving god. Changed at about 25,000 miles, so they had lasted well too - I’m certain swapping them around as per the manual helps a great deal with longevity.

Yes, I’ve head good things about those 1.5 Yokohamas. I noticed there isn’t much choice in with tyres with the 1.5 when I was browsing out of interest in the past. I think you’ve done the right thing in sticking with what you like.

Got over 30K from my original Yoko advans

Car registered in June 2010, bought in December 2010 with 18 miles on clock- mileage amassed between Dec 2010 and April 2018 when the tyres were changed.

Driving 4-5K per annum. Almost 60K on clock now.

Last year my in-laws complained their 2009 Cooper had gradually become undrivably uncomfortable.
ā€œHave you changed the tyres?ā€
ā€œIts only done 14k and loads of treadā€
ā€œGet new tyresā€
ā€œBut they’re still fineā€
ā€œGet new tyresā€
Needless to say the car was transformed after a set of new boots.

Re MOT advisory’s

As an MOT tester we are dam’d if we do and dam’d if we don’t……………

It’s all about covering your ā– ā– ā–  from DVSA

I took part in the Classic Monte Carlo challenge a few years ago in an Austin A40. I used Colway remould mud and snow tyres - they were brilliant, that little car flew up those mountains with at least 9ā€ of snow on the road. We did approx 3,000 miles in a week and 20 miles from home on the return trip had a puncture. Sods law.

Well, me and the neighbour did an ā€˜inspection’ of his may '19 Pirelli tyres, 6.5K miles  No tread void cracks or sidewall cracks. I was struggling to find anything spider crack wise, perpendicular to the outer tread walls, either. So that’s 6.5K miles on 1719 tyres. Car’s parked outside.
Add that to my Bridgestone Potenza S001 case, or tyres I’ve had in the past, I’m not convinced that low mileage necessarily = tyres which crack to the living daylights.

Right, here’s another one. Literally JUST CAME in after another neighbour and I did an ā€˜inspection’ of his tyres after he just arrived home from an MOT! '21 plate Arona, just over 3K miles on it. He said it had 2K miles on it, but I insisted on seeing his MOT print out
Anyway 4720 tyre date, pushing 4 years old, car was got late Aug '21. About 1K miles per year. Bridgestone Turaza. Car lives outside, passenger side faces the sun. Tyres = no tread cracks in the voids, or anywhere else. Look mint. So there’s another low mileage car with tyres looking totally fine. Neighbour’s loving me at the moment  I tell them I’m testing internet theories :+1:

I am sure this doesn’t help and people will call me crazy , it’s Friday so thought I would have a laugh  but I still very occasionally run a set of Yokohama a509 on one of my toy cars very low mileage under 4k with a pre2000 short date code 7th week of 1999 …. No cracks…. Kept in the dark at the back of the garage, on the car of course. ;-).

Right, another one!! Neighbour’s blue VW up! we both look over. 4K miles on an '18 plate, 4817 tyre date! She said she can’t remember the miles so I MOT historied it for her (save he going in to get her keys). Car lives outside, a bit awkwardly parked. So what, 650 miles a year. Low mileage enough to see these decrepit crack ridden tyres? Well, I must admit there seems nothing untoward. Me on the floor checking tread voids and sidewalls and general tread lol Another one which seems to defy this theory. With my own cars, and these neighbourhood ā€˜tests’, I’m seriously starting to think it don’t means one’s tyres are going to be crack city if they aren’t ploughing in the miles.

My experience has been that Michelins perish quite quickly and local tyre dealer has confirmed this.

I’d go by your own experience, which has shown that to you, as it’s relevant to your tyres, with your driving style, of your tyre age, of your tyre usage, of your tyre parking conditions, the roads you typically drive on, of your tyre journey lengths, of the temperatures and other weather conditions which you usually drive in and ten other variables tailored to you etc etc…rather than the tyre fitter’s opinion. Noting beats your own experience, as opposed to some one else’s, on a subject which has so many variables effecting the outcome.

I get that there are many variables, but there is also a huge population of tyres out there. I wonder if there’s any real scientific data based knowledge out there. But just to add another unsupported theory - what is the effect of overzealous application of tyre dressing by. second hand car dealers or ill informed owners?

Yes, tyre quality and certain ones more susceptible to it is no douvt another variable.
I can answer the last idea directly: On the OEM Bridgestones S001s, being a detailing buff, I’ve used Meguier’s Tyre Gel literally every week! Didn’t affect it at all (or maybe, who knows, stopped sidewall cracking?). I used it very often to on current other cars with PS4/5, Pirellis, Mich CrossClimate2 with no ill effects, not to mention on many a car I’ve owned over the last decade of so since I’ve been using it.
