Hey, I have a problem with my 2005 NB. Driving on a highway often becomes a pain with the soft top up. Over about 65-70 mp/h the wind noise the top couses becomes so loud, I cant even here the radio blasting at full power properly, let alone talking with a passenger. Its not leaking water and its pretty much in mint condition. Is there any way to make it a little bit easyer to live with other than getting a hardtop?
PS: sorry for my english, not a native speaker.
It’s the nature of the beast (car) they will be noisy with the fabric hood. Don’t worry mine’s the same when I rarely have the hood up, radio up a few notches and it’s the only time I can really shout at the missus and get away with it. You can check of course that the hood is taught and sits correctly, incorrectly fitted or adjusted will I suppose cause extra wind noise.
Sometimes choice of tyres can add to the noise, some makes noiser than others, especially at higher speeds.
Tyres can make a massive difference for noise.
I don’t remember the NB having drain hole flaps like the NC, on the NC missing or pushed up ones can amplify noise.
I use earplugs.
now so do I now on some occasions, just got a bit sensitive about the state of the old lugholes these days. What I have discovered is at speed with decent earplugs in the wind noise is a great deal less of course but ironically you can hear the radio a lot better, which is sort of a result…
i find expanding foam around the door rubbers help
My Mk1 isn’t that noisy, perhaps the tyres are the problem.
I’d say the problem is your tyres.
I had a similar unbearable noise issue in my MK1.
It only seemed to occur when my wife was in the car…

Apologies for the double post. Website hanging and then error message so I thought the first post had failed!!
The main noise comes from the flapping of the roof against the middle and rear cross frames. Try putting a handkerchiefs or cloth between the frame and hood.

Measure the top of your MX5. Write down the measurements for the length and width of the windscreen.
Cut weather stripping into the exact dimensions of the windscreen top that you measured. This should push the air a little higher over the hood.
Tape (for test) then glue if works the weather stripping to the top of the windscreen. Remember to use a waterproof glue. The edges should be lined up, perfectly.
Put the soft top of your MX5 up, and check that it will be able to latch with the weather stripping in place. Go for a high speed drive and see if that helps.

I like this. Might stop the problem of water going over the windoscreen into my lap when there is a light shower and I can’t be bothered to put the roof up!
Unless “She who MUST be obeyed” is in the car I have the roof down 99% of the time…

Thank you guys for the answers That weather stripping idea seems like a great one. If that doesnt help I’ll try another set of tires, pretty sure though its the wind hitting the top thats an issue.
Check that the little plastic covers that sit over the catch points on the soft top are intact, if they aren’t (and they frequently break), the top won’t seat properly and wind will make a real noise over the leading edge.
