I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _ Chassis WAXOL
Hi All
My above car is as stated, a MK2 of 1998 vintage_with 67K on the clock, used daily and going strong.
Previous owner has had the underside sprayed with WAXOL and I am considering having it re done after witnessing areas which have deteriorated and show the process of surface corrosion starting to take hold.
I have today received a quotation for re-doing this process and am slightly taken aback by it. Just over a grand! The process advised was by no means cutting corners and I would have been 100% confident in a good job well done.
I do think it worth having it done, but at what cost?
Therein lies the question for those who have perhaps recently had the process carried out. “What cost to have it done?”
Would appreciate your replies and perhaps a garage recommendation within the Poole/Bournemouth area.
Must admit, I thought that £350 to £400 would get a reasonable treatment done.
As for Waxoyl, I’ve used it on almost all of the older cars that meant something to me…, over a period of 40+ years, since it was a product of a company called Finnegans, that also made Hammerite.
I’ve always done my own Waxoyling. Waxoyl will wash away gradually from areas exposed to high intensity rainwater. Mostly that means inside the wheelarches. My practice has been to inspect round about underneath around this time of year, before autumn really gets going…, and refresh with Waxoyl the areas looking a bit bare.
Waxoyl is generally cheaper than some of the other stuff around…, £1000 seems a helluva lot.
£1,000 is OTT and there are better products available now too which typically would go for £450 - £650 for a full clean, dry and coating taking at least 2 days.
Agree with Ian I had my sport black fully under sealed and new anti roll bars fitted in June at the mx5 restorers in pevensey for £500 they had the car for 4 days , and done a first class job.
Thank you for your replies and the welcomed indications that this quote was somewhat over the top. I took a look on Halfords web page and it would appear that there are a number of worthy products to assist with this challenge, so I think I may be doing this task myself. The main chassis is good, its around the wishbone areas, plus the wishbones themselves which require attention. This is as indicated by the garage whilst showing me whats what, and whats to be done.
I have another garage appoint. different one Monday, so we shall see how or not they differ.
Will keep you posted
I, like many, have done this myself. Not all in one hit, but over a period of time. Guess the secret is in prep, a good wire brush on a drill, remove surface rust then treat with rust converter. I then used a Waxoyl based black under seal and the waxoyl itself in cavities. It’s quite a rewarding job and the undersea sets nice and dry. I got all the kit from Halfords.
Can’t comment on other products but feel I achieved a nice job. It also gets you well acquainted with your car.
I know it’s a bit far to go for you but as a comparison to what you were quoted, MX5 City charge £245 + vat. They did mine about 2 years ago and did a good job, I had done a lot of the prep myself so they only charged £145 + vat.
Thank you all for your replies, they all make interesting reading and I appreciate your time gents.
An interesting point being made reference D.I.Ying it and getting to know the underneath of the car whilst doing it. An area which we know exists, but we spend more time polishing the “you can see me bits” and most probably the engine bay as well whilst underneath remains the hidden area until an MOT and, exclamation “Oh really!” As with Cpt Carrothers, my mind is willing to do the job, but will my knees etc. get me vertical again.
Dosthilldave, excellent job, were you over a pit /garage ramps or jacked and supported at home?
Thanks guys for your time will let you know pricing Monday
