Underbody rubber inserts

Hello everyone

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND
  2. I’m based near: Dartford Kent
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _Under body rubber inserts.
I am bit anxious about the underbody rubber inserts by the sills, I have not got them, although I bought my car nearly new from a Mazda dealer , and the car has been serviced by Mazda dealers every year with a visual inspection ticked,
Are these only for transport when the car is new?

Many Thanks
Ahmed

Hi Ahmed
I have a mark 4 and I understand it is where the cars are tied down on the boat, then the dealers are ment to put them in before delivery to the customer,a lot of dealers do not seem to bother at all with putting the blanking plugs in.

Thanks for that, I would say this is careless of the dealers, i thought they are for the drains as I could not find the locations of the drains.
They do not come cheap.
I only found them at IL.
Couldn’t find them at MX5 parts.

Many dealers will give you a set of the bungs for free if you drop in and see them, they are not unique to the MX-5, other Mazda models use them too.

Check these videos (linked) for an easy way to approach the hood drains:

Thank you all for that,
Drove to 2 dealers in Kent one of them and after an exhaustive explanation and going to the mechanics said we fit them so we don’t have spares to give.
The other although working at the service desk cannot help because the service manager is off sick.
I guess I shouldn’t have gone on a Monday.

The car should have them installed.
You bought a car from dealership X
Get dealership X to rectify it.

You would think this is the case,
Dealership refused saying its passed the warranty.
Unfortunately MX5 UK did nothing,
As I am now convinced that when it comes to Mazda UK,
It is the dealer who is always right not the customer…

Here is one option, also a breaker would more than likely have them.

Dealerships (not all) continue to let themselves down unfortunately.

You could also try the parts department at a known good dealer and they should be able to order them for you.

That’s what I did for my 25AE. But £15 the pair!
Scrappies should offer them too.

Thank you for that, while I understand it can be purchased and its about 16 pounds for the pair,
Its the issue that a dealer sold the same car twice with paper work saying the car is initially inspected,
How can it be missed?
It looks like they are just ticking boxes.

The drains come into the wheel well of the rear wheels on either side, the linked diagrams help to explain this a bit.

To be honest you could argue whether having the bungs there in the UK climate is a help or hindrance, they stop residual water draining out from the rails so quickly OR they help prevent water getting in the rails.

I suggest the tie-down holes are in about the right place to scoop in salt and debris, thrown up by the front wheels, to accumulate and rot the ends of their sills adjacent to the rear wheel arches.
The usual place, hmmmm
How many cars lack the bungs?

Some observations to support my theory.
With bungs installed at PDI, my borecam revealed my Niseko sills were spotlessly clean inside after 17,000 miles.
Lacking bungs my 25AE after 11,000 miles had quite a lot of grit clearly visible aft of the tie-down holes. I flushed this out and let dry before adding Dinitrol, and bungs.

Could you please explain exactly where these bungs are located.
I had a good feel around the exit points for the drains and couldn’t find anything .
Presumably I’m looking in the wrong place.

Here’s a pic of my driver’s side bung showing the sill going on to the rear wheel arch.
(worth a thousand words)

Ian:
Thank you for your interest,
These 2 plugs afre not for the drains,
There are slots in the chasiy to tie the car for when it is shipped,
If anything in UK weather they should be plugged so no water and grit eat the frame.
Utter ignorance and carelessness from a Mazda dealer who write PDI done twice.
( pre delivery inspection)

Thanks Richard,
It turns out mine are in place, so no improvement to be made there…
