Undersealing late November, or better wait till next year?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 2013
  2. I’m based near: Dunbartonshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:

I bought my car a few years ago and brought it to Scotland. It’s relatively rust-free, and I’ve been using it here for two years as my daily driver.

I wanted to underseal it before the '25/'26 winter, but the local recommended guy who does underseal treatment can only fit me to do it in late November.

My understanding was that underseal is better done in summer, maybe early-mid September, because as soon as it starts raining, underseal will just trap moisture and dirt under the car. Plus, it’s more difficult for the product (Dynitrol) to properly cure in colder/wet conditions. The garage is heated, but it’s still going to be very wet and cold outside.

So, should I still attempt to do it this year (late November, when my council might start salting roads), or just hope it will withstand another salted wet winter and do it next year?

If not treated before a 2013 NC will likely have a fair amount of corrosion (particularly on subframes) that needs cleaning and treating before underseal products are applied.

Have you had it up and a proper look underneath?

Ideally you need dry and not cold/damp conditions for applying and after products are applied. In November you’ll be lucky to find this.

Regular underbody washing in winter will help you through to next spring.

Yes, but mostly it looks not that bad. It mostly looks like surface level rust, nothing is crumbling away or anything

cleaning and treating before underseal products are applied.

Yeah, I think they do it as well - they clean + apply rust convertor and let it dry for a night before applying Dynitrol.

Their garage is heated, but yeah, I’m a bit concerned it would be far from ideal and it might create a hidden issues for later. OK, will probably wait till spring and hope for the best

I had my NC done in February 2023.

It was applied in a heated garage after 3 days of preparation. No problem with any of it peeling off and I do look every few months to make sure.

I done mine outside my home , on jack stands, on my back in late October 2020.
I prepped thoroughly beforehand.
Used Dinitrol.
Car kept in unheated garage, cured no problem, still looks as good as it did when applied.

I may be able to help here if you send over some pictures of the underneath. Would be weather dependant. If it’s not too bad a coat of bilt hamber rust converter can be applied and then one dried a film of acf50 to protect it

Cant see an issue with it, i would prefer to let it cure overnight personally before driving it in the rain though.

Personally, I’d get it done. It sounds like you have a specialist doing the work, in a heated garage. And that he’s come on a recommendation. So he’ll know what he’s doing, and take the time to make sure everything has time to dry properly. That’s one of the reasons undersealing should always take several days. Get your car protected before it lives through another winter

Do you have pictures of the underside? I’m curious to see what a couple of winters of daily driving in Scotland do to an NC!
