Undersealing Recommendation South Buckinghamshire

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC
  2. I’m based near: High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Rustproofing & Undersealing

Hi All,

I’ve just purchased an extremely low mileage (16,500 miles) 2006 car. It’s in really lovely condition all over. I want to do all I can to try to preserve its condition, so want to make sure the underside is in tip-top condition and isn’t going to rust away.

I’ve searched the forums already for information on companies providing rust proofing and undersealing services. There’s a lot of information on multiple companies going back a long time. An awful lot of them no longer seem to be trading, or they are a significant distance away from where I live, or they are generic companies dealing with the masses (and ridiculously over-priced).

The general consensus of opinion seems to be that if you live in the south-east, then the MX5 Restorer is the place to go to for all your MX5 needs. That’s all very good, but it’s a very long way from me. I don’t think I can justify multiple journeys, dragging the wife down to bring me back, to allow me to leave car with them for 3 days. Realistically, with work and life in general, this means them having the car for a full weak. Between our 2 cars, this would clock up 650 miles!

Then there’s DoctorMX5 - Keeping Your 5 Alive - Rust Prevention Slightly cheaper than the MX5 Restorer, and they do the treatment in a day. A very long boring day, but still better. I can go down on my own, try to find a way to entertain myself for the day, then head home again. Only 150 miles to clock up!

I also found http://www.mx5works.co.uk/ They are closer to me, and are an MX5 specialist. Still a significant distance, and they don’t list this kind of treatment on their web site. I’m sure they probably do it, and I’ll call them to find out.

I’ve had a local, highly recommended, body shop take a quick look. Thanks Graham from Mark 1 Motors (Mark 1 Motors - Home | Facebook). He’s informed me that the underside is quite sound, and doesn’t need any major treatment (i.e., no welding), but he doesn’t have the facilities to do the work to the level I require.

So, I’m looking for advice. Does the MX5 restorer do a far superior job that it’s worth me doing all the mileage and round trips?

Does anybody know of a capable company which can do this job properly near me in High Wycombe?

When I say properly, I want the full works. Plastic panels removed, underside cleaned, de-salted, dried, surface rust removing, rust treatment applying, then cavity waxing, and finally undersealing. I don’t want a company to just give some 16-year-old trainee a couple of cans of spray underseal and tell him to go off and do it. I’m happy to pay an appropriate price for a quality job.

I’d prefer someone with specialist knowledge of MX5’s, but I’m willing to consider non-specialist if they have a good reputation. I’d love to hear about peoples experiences. There’s surprisingly little information on the web on this topic local to me.

Before anyone recommends that I do this myself, I don’t have the equipment, a garage to do it in or the luxury of the time. I have no choice but to pay a competent person/company to do this for me.

Thanks Everyone!
Paul
P.S. I’m lovin’ the car

Bit of DIY yourself during the summer?

Get some low profile ramps, a pressure washer, wash the underside, let it dry, then cover up your exhaust, brakes and spray it with the treatment of your choice, waxoyl clear or Bilt Hamber dynax.

It’s a messy job for a warm dry day, but satisfying to say you did it.

I’m literally about to drop my 2007 Sport off with Martin at M H Autos in Bletchley, Milton Keynes later today to be Dinotrol’d. I bought this kit and Martin is going to prep the car and apply it all for £250.

I’ll let you know how I get on with it!

@RM10 Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Please do let me know how you get on.

@sunzoffki thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check him out.

Hi Paul,

Some photos attached of the work carried out on my car today. It’s not quite finished and they still need to do the engine bay but hope this is of use to you!

This includes wax injection in the sills and chassis etc.

Thanks Rich, it certainly looks like they’ve done a decent job.

Was the work all done in a day, or have you got to leave it with them overnight?

I’m leaning towards www.themx5restorer.co.uk as they seem to get a lot of praise for their work. Thinking I can drive down and get the train home. 2 hour drive to get there, then a 4 hour train journey home. Not ideal, but they do seem to know their stuff.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks Paul, I dropped it off around 11am today and I imagine it should be done by tomorrow lunchtime - I’m not sure if they could do it in a day or not but I imagine it would be a very long day if so.

Fair enough with your preference. If you have a nice day then you’ve got the right car to enjoy the drive down, shame about the train journey though! Can anyone follow you down?

The wife could follow me down and bring me back, but by the time you tot up the total (and I use this phrase without any sexist indent  ) “man hours” along with the cost of petrol and wear & tear on the cars versus rail fair, it’s a pretty even balance.

I decide the browny points earned by not dragging the wife out (twice) is worth the grief to me :sunglasses:

Going to give them a call tomorrow to discuss my options.

Hi Paul

I had a similar decision to make a few months ago! I had my low mileage (14,000 miles) 2006 car undersealed by the MX5 restorer last week, and very happy with the work they’ve done. The guys there have a real interest in the cars, always nice to know your car is with a garage that care!

@GJMatthews How was their availability? Did you have to wait long to get it in.

I booked with them in late December, and the next available date was mid Feb.
