After driving to the end of the world (Yorkshire) and back to pick up a used but excellent cobra sport exhaust (thanks Paul) for my 2006 NC1 sport I finally got round to taking it for a spin this evening.
I wasn’t expecting fire and fury but I was expecting a bit more of a roar inside the cockpit. It’s ok and more throaty than standard but not by very much. I’m glad I bought second hand for a fair price but I’d have been very disappointed if I’d lashed out £500 plus for such minimal change.
Maybe it sounds better from the outside or through a tunnel, or maybe I’ve done something wrong but it’s hard to see how two bolts and four hangers could be assembled incorrectly.
Changing a back box is not going to change the song in the cockpit because the clue’s in the name. It’s the back (box) of the system.
You need to make inlet airbox changes to increase the engine sound. Some folk start by drilling holes in the bottom of the air filter box/housing using a cone bit to differing sizes.
Fitted on of these on my nc1, as stated not much more internal sound.
I then had my son pop it down the road with myself standing roadside and it sounds just dandy in my opinion.
Maybe you’ve got the Cobra Sport Road version backbox, which is much quieter than the Race version which I have. I just love the sound and the low burbles. It very much reminds me of the sound from my old Classic MGB Roadster exhaust.
video is private, so nobody apart from you has access to it. you need to change its property in youtube to unlisted for it to work for us (when a direct link is provided)
I think the whole exhaust, if you have catalysts/ high flow catalysts or no catalyst, the manifold and obviously the back box will influence the sound experience.
Honestly my car sounds fantastic, I love every single time i drive it and listen the noises it generates. I rekon probably the best sounding 4 cylinder engine i have ever heard.
Oh dear… i have a Cobra road back box on my 2010 1.8 Miyako… and I love it. The ‘race’ version is a lot louder ‘it sets off xar alarms and annoys neighbours as you drive past’ i read… so i didnt want to be anti social… and im pleased with my ‘road’ versio … in fact, in tunnels it’s a bit too loud!
Each to there own i guess. (Mine was bought new and fitted at Cobra in Sheffield).
Still loving my Scorpion manifold back system, no second cat, no centre resonator box. Just lovely burbles with the odd crackle and pop. Definitely one for the tunnels Cruising is hardly louder than standard but under acceleration, (most of the time) or downshifts, braking, (most of the rest of the time) lovely.
cheers
Marc
Did you buy the Cobra Sport Road version backbox for your NC? I bought a second hand Cobra Sport Race version backbox for my NC2. Initially it was a tad too loud and I got reverb in the cocpit when I had the roof up. After a thousand miles or so the noise reduced to a lovely roar on acceleration, along with a low burble with pops on deceleration. I absolutely love it. Cheers Fred S
