Universal steering column joint bolts (mk1) 🤔

so, here is the universal steering column joint with the gaiter on for mk1:
s-l1600

blue line is pointing to the pinch bolt. the head looks the same as a regular bolt. do i need a special tool to remove it, rather than standard wrench?

i’ve watched a video where someone is whacking the heck out of the top of the joint, where the red line is pointing. they use a spiked tool of some kind and a hammer to remove the joint.

changed the text in light of a reply

why is the steering column lock secured by shear bolts? why not regular bolts?
thanks

More likely the joint had rusted on the shaft and they were using a chisel to try and spread it to get it loose.

ahh, looked at the vid again, i think you’re right

The blue arrow bolt has to come out completely as the shaft will not come out with the bolt in place, normal tools should do it
If you have loosened the bolt and tried to pull the joint off you will jam the bolt as it sits in a groove in the splines as far as I can remember.
