USA vs UK MX-5 Ownership

I have come to notice a difference in ownership of the iconic MX-5

Over in the US, the owners seem to be younger thats looking on youtube of course, meanwhile over here in the UK,the owners seem to be more mature shall I say .

Is it just me or is this the case?

For the record my first MX-5 I picked up around 35 years of age the current one I stand at 51 years of age.

Be interesting to get feedabck of ownership here.

Sent with love of course!

Yes, I’ve noticed that too.

Or is it just that it’s the younger generation that are posting on Youtube?

Well thats a relief,
Someone said it could just be a younger thing connect to youtube, which could hold some truth?

Yes, probably right, in the US its quite common for younger owners to post videos, they even call them a different name Miata

And you have to "shift the gears :gear: lol :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

There seems to be no shortage of younger owners in the UK though some of them face absolutely eye watering insurance costs. However as a completely random observation of owners over the last six years I’d be surprised if the UK ownership average age is less than 50 plus, some of those will have had their cars from new going back to 1990.

There seems to be quite a few older owners on the miata.net forum.

Actual US stats

Before we discuss the results of our evaluation of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, it is helpful to understand who buys this compact sporty car, and what they like most and least about their vehicles.

According to J.D. Power data, 70% of Mazda MX-5 Miata owners are male (vs. 72% for the segment), and the median age of a Miata owner is 62 years (vs. 43).

I wonder if its to do with practically?

As a young driver would like to have his mates in the car?

Plus insurance as we all know the cost for younger drivers is overpriced (as to the new world we live in)

Maybe its a combination of all the factors.

For me and my family are in a position to own a 2nd car the first one is a mini countyman,(big practical and all the things needed for a family)

Maybe its a case of practically cost and affordability, social issues.

Interesting subject tho :+1:

Good points, maybe it’s also the perception of convertibles(‘typically’ driven by ‘older’ people) themselves is perpetuating. Case in point a few years back, on a Hyundai N cars forum, and concerning the i20 N (which I doubt would ever be called an ‘old person’s car’ lol), I recall asking someone if they would consider an ND MX-5 (when cars/alternatives was the topic, or off topic, chat). I recall someone saying something like (paraphrasing), ‘a convertible? no, I’m not old’ or similar.
