I keep my mx5 in a concrete garage not attached to the house, and sometimes use a small oil filled electric heater, although they are expensive to run, i still suffer damp in there and was wondering if a dehumidifier would help.
I mean the electric type, not the cheap crystal ones, and was wondering if anyone could recommend one. There are loads on ebay but the ones intended for use in outdoor buildings seem to be very expensive to buy and run, i think this is something to do with them not freezing.
If anyone uses one, i would be grateful for any info. or a recommendation of which type would be suitable, thanks Jan
It may be worth considering a Carcoon. They are cheap to run and work very well. Only problem is they are a bit of a hassle if you use the car every day.
As my garage was damp, and I could see condensation on the paint, I’ve just started using one of these
Appears to work fine in the garage at low temperatures. It blasts air out of the top, and has dried my garage out, I drain ~3 litres a day, I haven’t got round to fitting a drain to it, which appears simple enough. The fan carries on when the desired humidity has been reached. When drying it uses ~450W. The rest of the time a nominal wattage driving the fan which does not go off. It has digital settings for the humidity, and a timer.
~£120 + postage.
I’ve use a compressor based dehumidifier in the past, and it did not worked in winter, so a dessicant based system appears to work at low temperature.
I can’t comment on how long it lasts, but at present I’m pleased with the purchase.
I have seen similar things in classic car mags, They seem to work very well and the link was very interesting, thanks for that, the only problem i can see is the initial price as i am having the car rustproofed soon and that is quite expensive.I wonder if a carcoon or similar could be bought second hand? i will have to look into that, thanks again, Jan
Thanks for that steve it looks very good at the price , it’s good to know a bit about what type works too.I don’t want to waste money on the wrong one, some i have seen are several hundred pounds, o.k if you own a 911 or ferrari dino
Regards Jan, just edited to say i live in ashton and we watch saints as we are also from St.helens.------Sad to say i am editing again, i hate new years eve so i am at home, wanted to ask where you bought yours at the price quoted? i have been looking for ages on various sites and can’t get near £120 please let me know when you get chance, happy new year, thanks, Jan
I bought a premiair desiccant dehumidifire and would highly recommend one if you suffer with a damp garage. I emptied mine after 6 hours and there was about 2 litres of water in it!
I have one for the home a Premiair. It workes really well. They go by tank size, mine is 10 liters and also by how much they can do in a day, 20ltrs. The more you pay the larger the tank and the more they will do in a day. I work mine into the old Mk1 and can suck out about a gallon in 6 hour (thats in the car on the drivers seat with the door just on the lead). The car is crisp afterwards!! Everything is dry. In the garage yes they will dry it out if it is only condensation, you can get a draining model, that is like mine, you can run a hose outside so you don’t have to empty the tank. Under a certain temp it will warm the air it lets out to 14 degrees I think. They also play havoc with the bed bugs (mites) wether in the bed or the car! I like mine. It has a washing setting to dry cloths and three differnt humidity settings 70% 60% and 50%. If you dry the air to 50% you can feel your eyeballs start to srink and dust forms on them. Black mold can’t grow if the hum is under 70% so I’m told. If you do get one work it in the car, you’ll be shocked. Also they work best when the door is closed so they don’t have to work on changing air if you see what I mean. Great things. Cheaper than running AC in the car.
Oh also, the water is pure water, it can go in the battery for top ups, the screen wash bottle and the cooling system so don’t throw it away!!! No chlorine! I did used to drink mine as Britas filters cost so much but her indoors has stopped me making tea with the bodily fluids I breathed out. It does make a good coffee and pure tea!!!
Ratdogfink, yours is a more expensive larger one than mine, i mostly want it for the garage but i do not have any problems in the car itself (never go out in the rain ) so far i am very happy with it and like my ctek charger it is something i have had no experience of, and i am wondering how i managed without them , my mother is buying one at weekend, not a desiccant, as she only wants it for the house.
This one looks like a good buy, i think i looked at it before i bought mine, the trouble was i was looking for a desiccant type and did not realise that this one would operate at low temps, until i read all the details. The trouble with dehumidifiers, is, unless you buy one that works at low temps, to use in a garage or outdoor building, some, will be no use unless you just want it for using in your house, my premiair is great. Just editing to say the other problems i can see ,are the small- ish water tank, and the weight of the unit, mine is only 6 kg, although , as my husband is a weight lifter, it would not matter to me, how heavy it was but may be of concern to others, like my mother who is buying one ,this week, from argos, infact the smaller tank will be an advantige to her.
