Using OBD port for dash cam power

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ 2019 ND RF
  2. I’m based near: __ Cambridge
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ Powering dash cam from OBD port

Wanting to install a dash cam into my RF and wondering if anyone has used the Garmin ’ Constant Power Cable’ adaptor on their vehicle? I had read some reports of it causing issues with some other makes of car.
My Volvo’s Blackvue dash cam is powered via a Power Magic Battery located under passenger seat but such a location is probably not suitable for the RF. I am hoping for a ‘minimum disruption’ installation for the RF and the Garmin adaptor seems like a good solution.
Cheers

Hi Bob,

I had a OBD powered Accessory fitted to my ND Sport Nav (2017) gave me great joy when it worked. Unfortunately after a couple of months I stated getting errors & one day I couldn’t switch off my car. I don’t know if that was a problem with my attachment I had fitted or the car but after unplugging it & leaving it for a day I tried it again & got an error again.
I now use a GPS camera & HUD, not the best but it doesn’t interfere with my car.

Cheers for that Terry - bit more research needed - I’ll make use of the ‘hidden’ 12v socket for the time being once I decide on make of camera…

I actually run my dashcam off the USB sockets, they put just enough out to power my unit and charge my phone slowly despite me not having the Android Auto/Carplay upgrade. Does mean having a bit of cable on show though before it disappears behind the trim.
