At the moment my life is on hold as I have had an attack of Vertigo that is proving difficult to get rid of.
Forty years ago I had it, and I had it sorted by an exceptional Physio Therapist who unfortunately, has moved premises or has died.
Has any one on our website had this and come up with a way of curing it? I am in the process of using Techniques that are found on the internet but although these Techniques are helping a little bit, the vertigo is still hanging on. G Ps are not much help as they say it will go away given time, but I am an impatient sod and want to get on with what is left of my life.
First of I have to state that I’m not medically trained - go check with your doctor for appropriate help. The term vertigo probably covers many ailments, so take care!
Having said that, my mother suffers with dizziness occasionally; seasick to the pit of her stomach, headache, spinning room etc etc - for her it was defined as “BPPV”, which the Epley manoeuvre solved each time, in time.
As a full time GP I have treated many people with Benign Positional Vertigo very successfully with the Epley manoeuvre. Vertigo is simply a symptom usually consisting of horizontal rotational dizziness often associated with nausea. This is a common symptom and BPPV is a common cause. There are rarer causes occasionally requiring MRI scan of head but a good starting point is visit to GP for Halpike test and if positive proceed to Epley manoeuvre. My suggestion would be to ring GP for advice call and ask if he would book you in for Halpike/Epley - reason being that I usually allow 20-30 mins for this so if you have an initial appt they are likely to ask you to come back for the procedure which is a waste of your time. Also not all GPs offer the Epley manoeuvre and there may be a particular GP in the practice who offers this. Meantime you can try your own Brandt- Daroff exercises at home - instruction videos easily accessible online. Either way it is definitely worth seeing GP particularly as other investigations sometimes required. Hope that helps
As Matt - Short Shift - says, see your GP. I’ve been having occasional bouts of vertigo on and off for some years, about the same period as my tinnitus, and my GP prescribes “Stemetil” tablets when they occur and that sorts it out. But not every case is the same.
That is the manoeuvre that I am using at the moment about four times per day just keep me on my feet.

Hey Pollyanna,
First of I have to state that I’m not medically trained - go check with your doctor for appropriate help. The term vertigo probably covers many ailments, so take care!

Your GP should perhaps send you to see the E.N.T people. I suffered from vertigo in 2002 to 2008, very unpleasant so you have my sympathy. Stress in my case was a major factor. I hope your heart and BP have been checked to rule out that possibility. I was prescribed Serc which helped the symptoms within 6 weeks. Stemetil just made me sleepy.
I would also suggest going back to your GP. As the vertigo has not cleared up you should be referred to ENT and have a hearing test, in particular looking for a loss of hearing on one side.
Hi I am a therapist and agree with the previous suggestions esp re ENT. Also I would enquire if you have had an eye test in the last year/ changed glasses, as the ocular neural structure is a component in balance and coordination. Finally also check if yr sinus is casuing problem, and if you have nasal congestion.
