Vinyl roof with stitching (leaking)

I have bought my first mx5 which is a mk1, I’ve had it 1 night and it just rained today so I thought I best check out how water tight the roof is. So the vinyl roof itself is fine and in good condition, but there is a lot of stitching around the hood (from factory) which looks to be leaking, is there anything I can do to make the stitching more watertight or any products I can put over the stitching on the inside?

Thanks in advance

Just an idea…how about rubbing the stitching line with a white candle therefore embedding the wax into the stitching. Then warm with a hairdrier so the wax melts into the stitch holes and then clean off the hood with a warm soapy cloth. No idea whether it will work though!

The seams should be taped on the inside.
The normal waterproof adhesive tape used on outdoor clothing and tents should do the job if it is not already there, a choice of colours on that page, but it is expensive for what you get.
A cheaper way might be some of this clear gaffer tape

I thought it was odd to have stitching and no waterproofing but there is no tape on the inside. Thanks I have ordered some seam sealer tape :+1:

I’ll give seam sealer tap a go and if not ill give the wax a go. Thanks

I used to fit hoods. The sewn ones are quite cheap, and I’m afraid don’t last.

You need to treat the hood seams with a waterproofer. The stitching has a tendency to rot and fail if it leaking through the seams. This will preserve the stitching a little longer

Cheers, its coming the the Cotton stitching itself, I’ve got some waterproofing and seam sealer tape on order. If this all fails i will look at a new roof at some point.

Cheers
