I was hoping someone on this forum might be in the know or experienced enough to help me out with a few little issues I am having with wrapping a car of mine.
When laying the vinyl wrap down the thing sticks like super glue and by that I mean it's near impossible to lift up and when it does 90% of the time it splits, I'm not sure if this is down to the vinyl being cheap or if I am doing something wrong but from what I have seen on youtube videos and training guides everyone is able to re-lift the vinyl with little to no effort (I'm literally using 2 hands and body weight to pull the Vinyl back)
The vinyl I am using is called Chromatic with ADT for dry application
The panel has been sanded back as it was suffering badly from lacquer peel, I prepped it up filling in the spoiler holes and primer where needed and the panel is now very smooth to the touch and level to the eye. The panel was washed thoroughly and also cleaned down heavily with 70% alcohol.
I have tried other panels and have the same issue.
I used a heat gun to heat the vinyl before laying it on the panel (not too much) and it doesn't matter if I heat the vinyl or not when lifting to straighten / stretch it still splits because its sticks like mad.
So does anyone have any advice for a newbie to Vinyl Wrapping? am I not doing something right or is it literally a case of it being a crap vinyl and I should try again with something like Avery or 3M?
Forgive me if i am asking the obvious, but is the panel smooth as you say it has been sanded back? That stuff only works properly on smooth non porous surfaces
No matter what vinyl (dry fit or not) I have always used a solution of water with a tiny bit of fairy liquid sprayed on the panel then offer up the vinyl, squeeze out the bubbles and used a heat gun to dry and shape/mould.
However I have never tried to wrap an unpainted/sanded panel so maybe thats the issue?
No problem at all I appreciate you posting to help
So the panel itself looks like this (Although it has been sanded back further using 800 and finished with 1200 to make it smooth)
the car itself already appears to have had a couple of layers of paint so the layer I am at now is the original base layer, and I did wonder if it was sticking a lot to the surface because it is not being applied to a lacquered surface but then the Vinyl wrap behaves in the same manner on a normal panel that hasn’t been sanded back.
The normal panel was fully washed in a non wax shampoo, thoroughly cleaned with a clay bar and washed down with 70% alcohol solution before application also and the wrap still sticks like super glue and it is not easy to lift and glass like you see in videos such as this one:
I did read about the water and liquid solution and I was thinking about trying it but i’m still keen on finding out if there is something else amiss or if the vinyl is no good… I guess I could order a couple of meters of Avery or 3M and see if I have the same issue…
