Water ingress tracing

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Mk3
  2. I’m based near: Isle of Man
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Water ingress

Despite replacing both the front off and near side grommets both carpets are wet. Have I missed something. Are there any other places I should check ?

Are they wet up front in the footwells or more generally and under the seats?

Also when you replaced the grommets did you take care not to deform the metal around them? Can be tricky to get them out without doing so hence people straighten them back out and use silicone as well to help reseal.

I sealed mine with silicone, but it didn’t last long. A few years at most. So I put a patch of bitumen flash band one the top. Seems to have done the trick.

Also, have you cleaned the roof drains.

I did this with silicone and some t-rex tape over the top recommended by another member

Many thanks for your feedback. Really useful.
There’s no damp under the seats, only the footwells - but I didn’t apply silicone during replacement and to date I’ve only used silicone for the rubber seals
The tape sounds like a good second measure so I’ll undertake both

When the scuttle is off you’ll see a lip under the screen, if you start your tape under here and over the grommet then water (in theory) should flow straight over the top like a flashing and not collect around it.

That great Dean. Many thanks
