Waterproofing a soft top

The hood on our new MX-5 needs waterproofing as I have just discovered following the recent heavy rain.

Should you use a different waterproofing product on a PVC hood as opposed to a Mohair hood and if so how can I tell which type of hood we have?

This may sound like a daft question but as a newbie with no other cars to compare ours with it’s a bit tricky - roll on the summer when we can get some rallys and speak to other owners about their cars.

This is a mohair hood below, it’s a sort of canvas type finish material. Treat after cleaning with Renovo http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/renovo-ultra-proofer-mohair-hoods-p-166.html

Vinyl hoods well, they are exactly what they are and you should be able to tell between the two and need another type of product to clean and protect. I used Autoglym vinyl and rubber treatment on mine after cleaning.

Welcome to the addiction. Get along to your local meets, these cars are used all year round.

If the hood in mohair it will look almost like denim, if its vinyl, well it will look like vinyl.

Renovo is the cleaner and proofer of choice and you use different products from the range dependent on what hood you have.

If you pop your location in your profile it does make it easier for people to help you out.

EDIT: Posted at the same time as Mick, so apologies for duplicating

This might help - a vinyl roof will be like the door cards, mohair is material, more like the cloth seats.

Thank you everyone.

I have updated our profile with some further details - thank you for the reminder Nick & Jane.

I will check again when I get home but from the descriptions and photo it looks like we have a mohair hood.  The seller told us it was PVC which is what was slightly confusing us.

Hi and welcome,

Iuse Meguiars Convertible & Cabriolet Cleaner & Waterproofer always like maguiars products.

A 2.5 from 2001 will have had a vinyl roof from new. As the folks have said think of it as vinyl is just a plastic like stuff and mohair or other is a moven fabric canvas like material. Vinyl eventually splits along the edges with age and much use, mohair wears like an old pair of jeans and is also prone to grow stuff on it and turn green.

Ah brilliant!! Mine is Mohair, and I just love mushrooms![(yy)]

“Mohair” roofs made from a laminate material. The waterproofing comes from a rubber layer which eventually rots, hence the need to reproof.

Upon further examination, and based on the helpful descriptions everyone has provided, it looks like the seller was right and the hood is PVC after all.  Off to Halfords now for some waterproofing for it.
