We keep the mx up to scratch, washing polishing etc… we have used Mer but mainly Auto-Glym resin polish.I wash every week and use the resin polish twice a month.Firstly is this to often to polish, secondly is it abrasive, thirdly is there a wax that could be used which gives the same immaculate finish that is not abrasive… Thanks.
hi lance, the super resin polish isnt harsh stuff, it gives really nice results because its got fillers in it so it masks any swirling etc, whereas if you where to use a compound then that would cut into the paint not masking but removingswirls and could be too much with your routine, as for waxing if you get a good one then you shouldnt have to go over it so much with srp, do the srp first then seal the shine in with a good wax, then it should just be a case of a good wash sorts it, a decent wax could last i,d say about 3 months before reapplying.
Mer is a 3-in-1 product - cleaner, polish and wax. It doesn’t perform particularly well in any of these areas compared to separate, single-purpose products.
If your polishing regime until now has been limited to Mer and/or SRP then I would recommend trying a clay bar. The results can be amazing, restoring a glass-like finish to the paint before mild polishing and waxing.
I have had very good results with the Meguiars Quik Clay kit.
With a decent wax applied every 3 months to keep the paint protected you can probably limit your claying and polishing activities to once every 6 months.
What would you recommend,by the way pictures look brilliant, ours is sunlight silver but everyone comments on the shine, which is unusual for silver, apparently,we would prefer an Auto-Glym product,as we are pleased with there other products.By the way should our interior plastics be matt or shiny,at the moment they are shiny, and onyour advice ,which product would you recommend… Bittymy wife is nickamed by my mate as shiny tyres,as she also likes tyre dressing,is this sad ? I should say that our mx is a 52 plate 1800 in case this makes a difference tothe interior plastics by the wayflew through the mot today well chuffed
I use BOORA WAX. This gives a super shine because it’s carnuba. Very easy to apply with the small foam applicators and very easy to polish off. Just make sure that when you apply wax, you do it in straight lines following the path that the wind would take when the car is moving. This is different to applying polish, which should be put on in a small circular motion. Never use too much wax, just a light smear will do. To polish off, use a microfibre cloth, turning it all the time.
if you like autoglym there vinyl plastic and rubber cares quite good for the interior if you like it shiny, its personal preference really matt or shiny, i like a shiny finish too.
nothin sad about the tyre shine buisness its the finishing touches that make all the difference, best of putting it on with a cheap sponge or applicator though as it tends to go further and its not the cheapest, meguiars hot tyre shines good stuff but theres masses of choice out there,
Ive used AutoGlym in the trade which is very good for mass, But its very powdery. On my own cars I use a combination of Meguiars and Dodo Juice
I would recommend Meguiars for easy use. Smooth clay kit to start then their Nxt 2.0 paste wax. Paste as its easier and more controllable to apply than the spray . The Nxt 2.0 wax is a one stop shop product, polishes and seals rather than buying two separate products to do the same thing.
As a ‘top up’ to the wax why not use Meguiars Ultimate detailer spray. This will help your wax to last longer and stop you having to re-wax the car every few weeks. I only wax my car once a year when using detailer spray in-between. This of course is after washing it weekly .
BUT this is just what I would do, Im sure you’ll find your own products and way of applying them , which will suit you best
If you are refering to Meguiar’s, they are partner sponsors and having a stand at the NEC Classic Car Show 12th to 14th November where you can purchase and get advise on their products.
I also will be displaying my MK1 on their club showcase along with the other fifteen invited entrants.
Which wax would you recommend as a finisher auto glym hd wax is about £40 around here,a little expensive we thought, would love to post a pictureof our car on the site but dont no how to could you help please… Thanks
for a good wax £30-£40 is an ok price ( you can get some costing well over £300 ) as it does last a good few years. ( my last tin of nxt did and my currant dodo juice is ) Meguiars product can be bought from halfords , meguiars.co.uk on anywhere else online.
Ive not used Autoglyms Hd wax but this had had some good reviews form others.
then you can copy and paste the code into you postings and it will show the image, its the bottom code you want to copy and paste as there are 4 of them.
Harly wax works great! Auto Glym HD wax can be had on flea bay for about £24 delivered which is a bit of a bargain as it was almost double that when it first came out… I’m gonna get some when I run out of the Harly wax I’m currently using.
I have both Harly and Auto Glym HD and I do prefer the AG HD. Just ordered a pot of Raceglaze 55 appears to have very good reviews and at 55% Carnauba it is reasonably priced compared to a similar carnauba content wax. After all you only get what you pay for.
If your looking for Autoglym products, which I use myself and for the price have no complaints, grab hold of an autoglym mobile agent. I was driving through Birmingham and saw the van and decided to stop and enquire. From what I understand they have their own areas that they can work but the prices are so much cheaper than the Halfrauds or any of the other retailers and the larger the size of container you buy the cheaper it works out. As a guide for prices, last time I had some bits off the guy the prices I paid were about £20 for the HD wax, about £15 for the clay bar kit, about £8 for 1litre of Liquid hardwax (It’s called something else in the retail packs, I think it’s Extra gloss protection which is about £10 for 325ml) and about £14 for 5litres of their shampoo conditioner. If your in the Birmingham area and would like this guys details drop me a pm and I’ll send them over
I just tried Dodo Juice’s Lime Lite between washing and waxing. I used Autoglym SRP last time (2 weeks ago) and it did a good job of improving the paintwork, but I believe it is slightly abrasive and not ideal for every polish on soft paint. I waxed with Dodo’s Blue Velvet and I’m really pleased with the result - very high gloss and the colour looks deep. I can’t comment on longevity though.
I got a sample pack from Elite Car Care for about £25 and by the look of it this will last me about a year.
